 Call it anything you wish...that was my point and you got it just fine! :);)

The kind of toning/oxidation/sulfurization/chlorinization/crudification that is lightened is at the darker, most progressive stage. I have NEVER touched a rainbow toned coin (on its rainbow) with acetone - just the rest of it and the dark rim if present. I wouldn't do it - just in case...:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: And acetone DOES LIGHTEN the color of coins. I'll try to post some photos in a week or two (remind me) to put this to rest. And read my post again - "lightens" the whatever the color is from.

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: That's a good one! If we were guaranteed to go back, grab some ancient coins or stop at the Philly Mint and come back just fine, I'll bet you would go with me! We could split the profits from a dozen trips and live like those rich people you seem to hate. :p

My thought was to leave you there permanently. Besides, I have absolutely no desire to go back in time. I would rather go forward in time to get the winning Powerball numbers at such time when the grand prize was $500 million plus and there was no other winner.

By the way, have you noticed that I have been removing all of your emoticons?:)

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

The only thing that acetone even COULD lighten is by means of removing whatever foreign organic substance was placed on the coin to create the toning in the first instance. IOW, if acetone lightens anything, you've got a doctored coin in your mitts.

That, or just good old fashioned dirt.

Nooooooooooo, say it ain't so Joe! :bigtears::bigtears::bigtears:

Actually I never noticed as I don't sweat the small stuff. I'll go back and look. Meanwhile, you might find a better use for your time. I'm planning some neat coin alteration trials!

Might be, BUT...97% of the time neither you nor any of the other experts around here could tell I :cigar: :doctor: ever touched a coin I decided to "fix." :jawdrop:

Let me know when you plan on attending a big show in my neck of the woods. I'll gladly erect a 10'x10' sign....."AT & ALTERED COINS SOLD HERE, REEL CHEEP!"

I bet acetone lightens a coin whose edges were schmutzed with petroleum jelly infused with sulfur and set aside.

And before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, I don't believe in coin doctoring secrecy. Full sunshine. The faster the toning fascination world collapses, the better, I say. Demand toners all you want. The docs will make all you can drool over and buy.

"Original surfaces" my patoot! All big auction results prove is that at least two fools got together at the same time. Ever notice how often excess disposable income matches a complete LACK of disposable brain cells? Yeah.

Depends on the "resting" vessel. If one is incapable of subtlety and fine motor skills (which my stroke took from my right hand), yes black is the new black.

Chris, I respect you. Cool it, you are acting immaturely. We've both bought and sold coins that were ostensibly market acceptable, and probably were not. Just because they were certified doesn't mean they weren't doctored. You are making a mountain out of a molehill here. You don't like my experiment, then please don't be a part of it.

No. You just think you do. Thinking doesn' equal "knowing."

Yeah, at post#75. I thought you were a famous published chemist. Anything more enlightening/useful you would like to add to this thread or the experiment? Waiting...:nailbiting:

Well then, I'm the stupid one. :(

Yep, just looked, at 19 years old. You are not the member I thought you were. That's too bad, he could have added something to the thread.

I'm definitely in the knowledge is power camp. Ignorance of something doesn't make it just go away. Lack of accurate information just prevents the innocent from being able to recognize the sham.

I once left a stack of kennedy halves (clad and pulled from circulation) in the boiler room just to see what happened after a bit of time. We ended up moving and I forgot to take them with me... :banghead:
