Yeah, maybe Syl can weigh in on this when he can break away from running "Coin Idol" in the other forum. :D

No sooner said than done... :D

Ah the Gothic Crown... i agree i think i would give up a good deal of my collection for one.

I've actually met one of the 8460 examples in the flesh, 8000 being 1847s and 460 being the 1853s.

I met an 1847... if i didn't like them before i certainly liked them after! I even held it, well it was in a cardboard 2x2 but it was good enough for me...

I definately say it's one, note... ONE of the nicest coins ever. (The nicest for me goes to another coin denomination)

    See here...

But for the Gothic crowns, i love em.

sylvester that sure is a nice coin

i think uk is very lucky in so much history and diversity, and the fact we recorded it all sure helps.

i think all crowns and florins have something about them most definetly have the most intresting obverse in my opinion of course.

there is a victoria shield back proof sovereign though that is most lovley too.

that crown i posted by the way did sell on ebay for 1000 usd what a complete bargin someone got.

i wonder how many of that 8000 or so are actually still around in ef+ state.im sure there cant be more that 100 or so.

ps. got me a 500 post 47 bag of sixpences today :), gonna be fun making date sets out of that lot.

anyway will try do this all on one post.:) makes a change from me im sure.

looking through marsh the gold sovereign i thought that coin you showed was hendry v11 1489 but its slightly diffrent so will go for hendry v11 anyway diffrent strike later or sooner i dont know.no idea how a coin that age could stay in such good condition, must have wedged into a cornor of a castle or something for 100s of years to keep like that.

and i cant find that "gothic" sovereign anywhere grrrr

Well you're partly right. Those coins were tucked away in a corner of the castle alright - right in the King's coin cabinet ;)

As for this gothic sovereign you are looking for - look for it in India. Only it's not called a sovereign - it's an Anna. The design is very similar but not quite the same ;)

    GDJMSP thx :)

knew i had read about it somewhere.

by the way do you know anywhere for bulk pre-47 sixpences. circulated or not. finding it very hard to get these in a quantity and have been buying some mixed just to pick out the odd 10 or so.which just means i need to sell on the rest again.

Quite a few i should think, most are above GoodVF as the coin never entered circulation... finding low grade ones that are more affordable is very challenging indeed. I don't think i've ever seen one much lower than EF.

I think it's safe to say though that quite a few of those 8000 are no longer in existence, one or two must have met some kind of sticky end. I have heard of them being holed and mounted which to me counts as one destroyed coin.

Yes it's a sovereign, not the usually 20 silling sovereign but a 'Fine Sovereign' of 30 shillings... and it's mightly fine indeed, but it's a 1553 dated one.

The legend goes something like this.

Obv; MARIA DG ANG FRA Z HIB REGINA MDLIII (Mary by the Grace of God Queen of England, France and Ireland 1553)

Rev; A DNO FACTV EST ISTV Z EST MIRA IN OCVL NRIS which is an abbraviated form of A DOMIONO FACTUM EST ISTUD ET EST MIRABLE IN OCCULIS NOSTRIS (This is the Lord's doing and it is marvellous in our eyes)

So it's not Henry VII but it's his grand daughter Queen Mary I of Protestant burning fame.

Well i don't have any hammered sovereigns cos well i just can afford anything like that, bigger that a Morgan dollar and gold, i should wish!

I've got a slightly damaged gold 1361 Quarter noble in my possession and i'm saving up for a James I Quarter Laurel... that's if the Charles I gold unite doesn't tempt me down that path instead.

See here for the Quarter Noble...

damaged but still retaining good features i like it :)

the trouble with collecting very old coins is the prices. And coins that are basically totaly worn i wouldnt want have to still have good features i dont know why people buy such worn old coins, id rather some good grade cheaper ones.

by the way how much is that coin valued at if you dont mind me asking.and what else can you tell me about it.its very nice indeed

Just to put it into perspective, that queen Mary sovereign show earlier was sold for $12,000 (Some lucky person got that beauty).

My Quarter Noble is worth approx $300 or there abouts on a good day. Well the mint in London at the time i think was in the Tower of London infact i think all English coins minted in London upto 1816 were minted in the Tower, so all those sixpences you're looking at were minted there too.

Yeah everyone likes that sixpence! I've got a nicer William and Mary one that's not on that page you're looking at. The one shown on that page i sold a few months back so i could afford the new one.

Probably somewhere between a few dollars, and a few hundred dollars.

There are many factors that go into determining a coin's value.
