Sorry, I misunderstood the post. [IMG] Earlier today I reported the lottery aspect of the auction through the same link that Susan just posted. I'll bet it does no good.

I reported all of this seller's "antique coin" auctions. The Morgan is the most blatant. If I don't hear from eBay regarding being a member of their Coin Watch Community by Friday, I'm going to call them. This is ridiculous and something has to be done. (By the way, if this works out, can I count on all of you to help a little and let me know if you see anything that should be reported?)

I'm pretty sure it is also against eBay rules to send another member's e-mail address to everyone else in the auction.

Oh, and for what it's worth, Susan- I'll help scan for scams. Although I don't know much about coins yet, I figure it will help me learn, and will be valuable knowledge for when I start bidding online.

There is that also. You should have seen the Morgan. That already ended. And, by the by, guess what? Ebay still hasn't acted on any of the coins that I reported this morning. What a surprise

Doesn't surprise me a bit.

I have sent Coin World an e-mail to verify the identity of someone who sent me a message through eBay about my participation in that Community Coin Watch forum. If he's legit, I think I'll respond to his request for an interview.

I think you're right, but with only a half dozen people on their Coins Community Watch, I'm not surprised that they're not keeping up. I think 6 people could handle it if they did it full time, but they're doing this in addition to their own selling and buying.

I got the e-mail from the same guy.
When I checked his eBay user ID, it says he's not a registered user.

The name is the name of of a CW writer, but legit, or not, doesn't matter. I don't do interviews.

Perhaps you should Jody. I've done quite a few since it never hurts to express your opinion. You might be surprised at the good it can do sometimes ;)

    GD,
I also heard from this reporter and he said he is interested in finding out what the exact concerns were of the people who participated in the workshop and also what eBay's reactions were. Although there are many problems with eBay, there are also honest sellers who could possibly be hurt by the article that Starck wants to write. I did not get the impression that anything else except for the negative would be addressed in this article. For that reason, I think this article could do more harm than good.

Perhaps - but knowing the editor of CW as I do - it is likely to end up being a balanced article. But as long as the truth is printed - and I've not seen CW be any other way - that what happens, happens. For I am always in favor of reporting the truth - even if it does harm some.

    GD,
With all due respect, eBay is not your livelihood. Ebay is trying to improve things but, like everything else, they're not going to get very far until the right person is involved who really wants to make a difference. I simply feel that the article in question may be a little premature. I would much rather see how things are handled first.

I understand your perspective as well Susan. I also understand that as an ebay seller, you could be harmed financially by any adverse publicity about ebay and some of the practices that take place. For as they say - it only takes 1 bad apple to ruin the barrel.

Is this fair to you and other reputable sellers ? No of course not. But by the same token is it fair to the hundreds, if not thousands, of buyers who are taken advantage of on a daily basis for the truth to not be told ? I think not. But you know what - any harm that an honest ebay seller may suffer will be short lived. For as they also say - the cream rises to the top.

What you are doing is looking at this from the wrong point of view, in much the same way that ebay themselves have been looking at it for years. Instead of thinking that publicity about the rip off sellers on ebay will harm your sales - what you should be thinking is about how once the public, the buyers, are educated about all these rip offs - they will be looking for the honest sellers. Instead of spending their hard earned money on fakes and counterfeits - they will be spending their money on the genuine article that YOU, as an honest seller, offer. Your sales will go up in the long run - not down.

How many people do you think there are who will not buy on ebay at all because they know or hear about all the scams and rip offs that take place ? In the past couple of years, I could count a couple hundred collectors from this forum alone who have stated that they will not buy, or very seldom buy, on ebay because of this. But take away all the bad - and the good will flourish as never before. The buyers will flock to ebay in droves once they have confidence that ebay is doing everything it can to stop fraud and that the ebay sellers can be trusted.

As I said before - revelation of the truth is always a good thing. For everybody ;)

    GD,

The perspective that you offer is definitely a bigger picture than I was considering and all that you say is true. I'm going to have to give this more thought.

Please understand that I am 100 percent for educating the collector and I am not defending eBay and their questionable policing methods. Their methods are definitely not working at this time and something must be done.

If I could be sure that nothing I say would be taken out of context, I would not hesitate; but I have seen well-meaning and honest statements taken completely out of context as suited the moment and then it is no longer the truth that is being published.

I will think on this for a while. Thanks for your input - it is very valuable.
