The reverse is a facsimile of a Geodetic Survey marker commemorating the Washington Monument. Do a Google search for Geodetic Survey Markers near you. There are thousands of them across the US, maybe tens of thousands. Really interesting to go out and see them in the wild.

New Berlin, NY Union Monument.

This Union monument keeps a silent vigil over the small New York village of New Berlin. It was erected on May 30, 1877, one of the oldest in New York State. It was erected only 12 short years after the close of The American Civil War. The Union sentinel, atop the monument, looks out over the large St. Andrews Cemetery, contains close to 150 Union soldiers. In the early years of the war, many boys and men left their hometown in Otsego County, to do their part in preserving the Union. Many returned home heroes to resume their lives as best as they could. Many, however, died in a strange foreign land, returning home once more time to be interred here. They too were heroes of the Union.
