Hello all. It's Monday again! I'm calling it "Monticello Monday!". Please post your coins, tokens or medals with the Monticello building. Fun Fact: Thomas Jefferson's first home (The first Monticello building was named after what other meaning of the name?)
In 2006 I opened a roll of nickels. Each one had the same die chip on the left end of Monticello. They were somewhat progressive. Here are a few examples:
Some of my "home made" Monticellos: 2001-P NGC MS66 6FS PL 1945-S NGC MS67 5FS 1950-D NGC MS67 5FS 1940-D NGC MS66 6FS, PCGS MS66 FS, ANACS MS67 6FS
Here’s one I picked grabbed via auction recently. I’ve been trying to assemble a full set of the early Jefferson proofs, 38-42, and wasn’t at all considering anything later than 42 but I saw this one and had to have it.
Here's one that I thought might come back AT - bought it raw with this toning maybe 10 years ago. Straight graded, got it back today. As usual, pictures don't do it justice.
The Monticello that may have been ... This was Schlag's original design. Jefferson's home also appeared on the Jefferson Commemorative Silver Dollar.
I have to say I really like the Schlag original design! Wish they would have used that design for more recent coins!
Yes, it is better than the typical government "tolly car" Monticello the used for the final design. The excuse was they didn't think that they could stike it up consistantly. The mint system had a lot of problems stiking nickels from the first 1866 Shield Nickel until fairly modern times. The "full steps" issue wasn't all of it.
