My Grandfather had a loose brick in the basement fireplace, and made just enough room behind it to hide his bankbook and some random small papers. I hadn't seen a bankbook in a long time!

There is a story from my family tree. My uncle did extensive research on it and traced our roots back to 1500 England. Fast forward 330 years and one of my Great Uncles had buried jars of gold coins on his property. Nobody in the family knew where on the property and after another 120 plus years I guess it just became another family "legend".

I was telling my grandfather this story last summer, about the property and asked if knew anything about it. He told me that back in 1936 or 1937 he and his Aunt were planting in the fields, and digging. She dug up a mason jar full of old gold coins! It was on the same property described in our family tree. When I asked what happened, he told me they sold them as it was the depression. Imagine the gems . My Uncle who buried them was born in 1815 and died in 1875, so I can imagine he probably hoarded a lot of the early gold coins. That is the only jar they found.

The risk is the tape gets old and brittle and breaks one day or the adhesive gives way. Another risk is that someone hires a housekeeper to clean the house and they go to clean the ceiling fans without being asked. . .

I experienced this. Was with my wife at her grandmothers bedside in the early 1990’s on her last day. She whispered in my wife’s ear to find the loose brick in the fireplace because she had a litte cash hidden there. Well that sweet little old lady had almost $2000.00 in very tightly rolled bills tucked behind that brick..... I wish at the time I was financially able to swap out some of those old bills that we used to get her a very nice headstone.
