Here's a possibly interesting topic, modern coins minted in an ancient style, that is, hammered, no collar, hand-engraved dies. This should probably be in the World Forum, but you are my people, so I post it here. There are likely many Far Eastern coins that would fall in this category. I give you a newp, fanam of Mysore... Tipu Sultan, Mysore, AD 1782-1799 AV Fanam, 7.74mm, 0.37g, Patan mint: 1789. Obv.: HA (Initials of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan's father) within inner linear and outer dotted borders. Rev.: 1218 (= AD 1789) / Zarb Patan (Patan mint), within inner linear and outer dotted borders. Reference: KM 128.1 Thank you to THCoins for translating the Arabic! So post a modern coin minted in ancient style.
I don't know much about them but have seen them posted here several times. Yours is by far the sharpest and best example I've seen!
Excellent choice for a venture into eastern parts. Indeed this one still looks very "ancient". First some warning for possibly interested members: Don't buy these from e-bay from a seller you do not fully trust. Nine out of ten offered (maybe more) of this category are modern fakes ! The text on the right side is stylized Persian. Below the horizontal bar from right to left is "Zarb Patan". So struck at Patan mint. Above the bar from right to left the date 1218. Tipu Sultan introduced his own Mauludi date system during his reign (in the beginning the islamic Hijiri calendar was used). 1218AM corresponds approximately to 1789AD.
I was REALLY hoping you would come to my rescue! The coin was purchased from a long-standing reputable dealer with a lifetime guarantee of authenticity, so I have no concerns there. Thank you for explaining the date - I'm going to pat myself on the back for reading it correctly.
Of course no photos, but weren't there hand hammered Moroccan coins from the late 1800's? I have a few from lots and the like, and was shocked they were so new when I looked them up.
that's a cool little gold coin JA, i would have guessed it was medieval looking at it....maybe about 700 years older than it its. i like modern coins that remind me of ancients, like russian wire money... how much different are these 18th century chinese coins than one 1000 years older? not much... these wacky spanish overstrikes (or counterstamped) remind me of byzantine coins,
I've seen them, but I believe they're cast, so they usually have pretty soft features. And they come in a few denominations. Here's a page of Google images.
Here's some coins that i think look ancient, but are from the 1800's. Japan.. Gold, i did test this with 14k acid, held up very good!! 12mm x 23mm Japan. Silver..16mmx 23mm They remind me some whatof these India coins from 321-187 BC.
Lorraine, Duke of Lorraine, Theobald II 1303-1312 AD Theobald II on Horse & Sword w Eagles (Alerions) Lorraine, City of Metz 1415-1540 AD St Etienne Kneeling & Family Shield Lorraine. Charles IV, 2nd reign 1661-1670 AD Crowned Shield & Eagle Duke of Milan, Bernabo & Galeazzo II Visconti 1355-1378 AD Serpent with maiden & Ambrose on Throne France, Henri IV Huitieme d'Ecu 1599 1599 AD Cross Fleuree & Crowned Coat of Arms
Interesting thread with very cool posts.. My only offering, or the closest I could come to a modern 'coin' with ancient styling, is my Attic replica from the British Museum and I doubt many wish to see that again after just posting it a few days ago....Besides, it's not really a coin LOL
Nice coins guys, i'm learning how to put two pictures together. easy for some harder for big dummy's like me!! This was a test, i think i may have it, now need to take better pictures, sorry JA for jumping your thread.
Probably not a good comparison but one that I recently acquired. This is 1898 Syracuse NY store card from Stearns Bicycle Company. It copies an ancient Syracusan dekadrachm from Sicily.
