I usually check Vcoins once or twice a day in the mornings and evenings. For some reason I did so in the middle of the day and saw a newly listed example of a very rare Domitian Caesar denarius I have been hunting down for quite some time. I immediately clicked the 'Add to Cart' tab and lo and behold - it was sold! I missed it by seconds! So, this is not a normal thread in the sense that I am posting a newly acquired purchase, but rather a newly missed purchase. Domitian Caesar RIC 922 Very rare with 'CAES' in the obverse legend instead of the vastly more common 'CAESAR'. My hat's off to the collector who recognised it straight away for the rarity it is! And if you are a fellow CTer - don't be shy, be proud that you got such a great coin! If anyone wishes so, please share your missed coins. Misery loves company.
Not to rub salt in your wounds, but that was a nice one that got away. Mind you, I'm a "Magpie" collector who mostly collects from aesthetics, and am ignorant of specialist varietes, but I like that one. I just missed the boat on this 12th century Crusader coin; a helmet denier of Bohemond III of Antioch. I do see a nicer one out there, actually, but at 2.5x the price.
Just moments ago, asleep at the switch, I missed bidding on this Septimius Severus sestertius (?) on eBay - an AFRICA issue mis-listed as a Byzantine coin. It went for $20.50. Not a beauty, but my kind of bottom-feeding catch...but not this time.
It wouldn't have bothered me so much if I had missed it by several hours instead of a few seconds. Oh well, I'm sure another one will turn up in a couple of years.
That's really frustrating. I've had a few moments like that although one sticks out. I was at a very well known dealer's booth at an ANA show, browsing through a box of their coins. I found one I liked, a nice example of a tough type, and said I'll buy it, paying their asking price. He started to reach for his invoice book when his partner put up a finger. His partner was on the phone, apparently with another client who was discussing the same coin. I heard the partner tell the customer (after I committed to it) "There's another collector interested in it so you need to make a decision" and that client then agreed to buy it again after I said I'd take it. They had a rather heated disagreement on it between the two of them and ultimately I just let it go. I haven't bought anything from them since.
That's pretty bad form, but things like that happen often. I've said it many times (and I am sure most others have as well) 'there will always be more coins'!
I really never cry over spilled milk on a lost deal, lost auction, etc. I just move on. HOWEVER, this behavior is WAY out of bounds and is morally wrong. I hope enough people realize what kind of people those Dealers are and never do business with them. They severely broached a bond of trust, and you were severely wronged. All over a few extra dollars at a single moment. That deeply saddens me.
