I got a miscut 2009 dollar bill at work. Was wondering if its worth anything?

The bottom edge isn't even cut right so I thought that was strange, but I used a counterfeit pen on it and it seemed real. Any ideas?

    1. If it's real it is worth something.

    2. I don't know if it's real.

    3. Don't fold it!

I'm guessing someone may have stolen an uncut sheet of bills from someone else and just decided to cut them and spend them. The bill is probably real, but I can't see it being worth much more than $1, since the bottom edge does look like it was handcut, rather than a machine accident.

I also say that it came from an uncut sheet with some certainty. 1) US dollars aren't cut to be that big. 2) Dollar bills from uncut sheets are very high serial numbered 3) The bottom appears to heave been hand cut. Keep searching though!

But aren't uncut sheets close together? This one has a lot of room on top and bottom? The two uncut sheets I have wouldn't be possible to have this bill cur from hand.

Why on earth would someone cut up a sheet of ones? I could understand if one got desperate and cut up a sheet of hundreds, but why on earth would someone cut up ones?

That black mark you see at the upper left face, is a guide on the top edge of the sheet for alignment. That top edge is wider than the spacing between each printed note. The small line above the bill's vignette in the center of the same margin, is where the cutter would trim if the notes were to be cut and banded separately. They leave the full sheets untrimmed because it serves no purpose to do it. The same with the right side, so the placement of this note was upper right hand corner. Definitely it was cut out by hand from a 32 position sheet of notes. Here is a picture of that position and you can see the wider margins. Those inside margins are only half size when cut separately. It's not from an uncut sheet. The serial number starting with A991 does not match the uncut sheets for 1999. The lowest uncut 1999 series sheet is A993 60001A. So from the information I found on line, this looks like an error cut bill! To check any 1935D to 2006 serial number , Star note, uncut sheet, etc. go to the address http://www.uspapermoney.info/serials.pdf for $1 to $100 bills.

    (For 1999)
    Collector printings (uncut sheets):
Begin serial End serial Type Printage

    A 993 60001 A - A 999 99999 A dc $ 640,000 max
    B 993 60001 A - B 999 99999 A dc $ 640,000 max
    B 996 80001 B - B 999 99999 B dc $ 320,000 max
    C 993 60001 A - C 999 99999 A dc $ 640,000 max
    D 992 00001 A - D 999 99999 A dc $ 800,000 max
    K 993 60001 A - K 999 99999 A fw $ 640,000 max

As for the "hand cut" look of the bottom edge of the bill, I'm not sure how it could have happened.

As said above, don't fold it any more than it has been and don't try to flatten it out with an iron or anything like that.

I did check the serial number for 2006 uncut sheets and the photo above matches the list.

    (For 2006)
    Collector printings (uncut sheets):
Begin serial End serial Type Printage

    C 994 24001 A - C 999 99999 A fw $ 576,000 max
    D 991 00001 A - D 999 00000 A ? dc $ 800,000 max
    E 997 76001 A - E 999 99999 A dc $ 224,000 max
    K 996 80001 A - K 999 99999 A dc $ 320,000 max
    L 997 76001 A - L 999 99999 A dc $ 224,000 max

Very nice find! Get someone to help you with how to treat the bill from here out and see if they can give you an idea of the value.

I only have one error $1 and it has a nice gutter fold in the center of the obverse.

Good luck, and don't let anyone talk you out of the bill without verifying what it may be worth. It may even be worth having it set for grading.

Certainly not for spendable money as that would be too obvious (roll eyes here), so it must have been just to bother you. ;)

They do it because they spend the money. Someone (not the collector who owns the notes) obtains them...usually by stealing. They then cut them up and spend them.

I can't find any updated listings like the ones above, but I did find a sheet of 32 for sale on eBay that start A977, so this would make this bill from an uncut sheet serial number.

I've seen a lot of "mis-cut" error bills for sale on eBay only to find they were made from uncut sheets by checking the serial number. I look at the wrong series in my answer above. I checked series 1999 and not series 2009.

SO, as stated above, this is not an error. It's from an uncut sheet and for some reason it was cut up.

We always appreciate an honest attempt to correct an answer in a post. These things happen. You could have just ignored it, left it as is and not change anything. Thanks for the up date.

Hello, I really don't know where to look to find out information, though I have checked the link above and didn't find it… I recently was given a one dollar bill that struck me funny because the printing is not aligned. The serial number is E90366970C. The year, 2009. How would I find out if this is worth anything other than a normal bill? Thank you in advance!

Most misalignments are minor and usually don't carry a premium. That's why you need a picture.

Does the paper feel real? Rub a corner of it with a clean piece of white paper. Does any color end up on the white paper? If it is CF on wonky paper, it's a very nice one.
