Back in the 50s, some of the mint sets were made with cardboard holders. Because of the packaging, many of the coins toned. Some are pretty and some came out with toning that not everyone cares for. Many if not most of these sets have been broke apart but the coins can have the look that they probably came from one of these cardboard holders. Please feel free to add any images you might have.
For sure my friend. Back in the day I bought a 1957 Original Mint Set and sent some of the coins to PCGS for grading. I'll see if I can find them and post back to this thread Larry.
The above were. I've also twice got solely a D mint card, one 1956, one 1957, maybe 5ish years ago. In both cases I was attracted by the toning on the Washingtons, and the toning on the 1957 D Franklins was fairly decent too (there are no 1956 D mint Franklins), as was the toning on some of the minor coinage for both years.
What seems like a 100 years ago I had all of them, except for the '47 and '48 sets - never did manage to find those 2 before I quit collecting US. And I'm sad to say I only have a couple of the pics left, most were lost in a computer crash. But I've still got a couple left.
I've noticed that quite a few collectors are searching for "Original" sets. The prices have gone thru the roof and I'm not paying those prices.
I'm glad that you've got them all, but no mint sets were produced in 1950 (and assorted other years). Also, starting in 1959 the Mint stopped using paper/cardboard Mint Set packaging, so the toning aspects of the Mint Sets changed dramatically. In any case, congratulations on the sets you do have.
