I've been told this is probably envelope toning on this Franklin. Do you agree? To me it's neither attractive or not, it just is. Also would you consider this FBL?
Given the evenness of the toning I'd say there is a good chance it is. As for FBL, it looks like it is but the pic is a bit small to say for sure.
Looks like a great thread to add this coin and some questions. I have several hundred UNC Franklins with this pinkish look. Any idea of what storage method would have caused it? PCGS is good with the this look but I don't see very many Franklins with this color.
Question to the experts ... If a coin would have had distinct clear bell lines ... but was nicked (say in a coin bag) interrupting the lines ... would it still be graded FBL? In other words ... Is FBL a grade based on the strike of the bell lines? Or on completely visible and uninterrupted bell lines? I have seen contradictory info
The designation says clear and with no breaks. A nick across the lines is a break. It works just like the FS designation does with nickels. A hit across the steps and no FS.
Larry, my best guess for your coin is envelope toning. Officially a nick knocks a coin out of FBL status, but the fact of the matter is that there are PLENTY of slabbed coins out there with FBL designations that have nicks, dings and outright gouges crossing the lines.
GDJ and SKY, thanks for the info on FBL ... yes ... it's confusing when you look at PCGS and NGC graded FBL coins
