In reality they do. They have both the mailing list for new item releases and the MY Account where you are able to store your shipping and payment info for quick log in and check out.
Clearly woodyhenderson doesn't understand how the mint works and or how actual businesses work! Awesome reply.
You'd still have to get through on either the website or the phone lines which is what folks are really complaining about. Someone that really saw the value in this offering would have been working BOTH options at the same time and would have employed his brother, sister, mother, father, aunt, uncle or casual business acquaintance to do the same thing until an order could be processed. This isn't a difficult concept folks. Limited Mintage + Highly Popular Coin Series = quick sellout(via clogged phone lines/web page) It's not a new thing and until the US Mint specifically states a HH Ordering limit of 1 per HH (like they did with the 2009 Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set) you simply have to understand that release day is going to be very, very busy and try to increase your odds of getting through just like everybody else did.
Way too much of a conspiracy theory to warrant a credible reply but I'll give it a shot. Once it was publically known that a new reverse was to be implemented, astute collectors simply made the basic comparisons. http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=651801 These comparisons occur with each and every issue of US coins. Unless, of course, you actually think that John Nanney got a call from the US Mint asking him to look closely at the SAE's he was sent?
I think sir that people are saying it was the free for all of anyone being able to order 5 sets that led to the website and phones being clogged. As I understand their suggestion, they are saying if you are a loyal customer of the mint, you should have been able to preorder a set in advance and not have to fight over getting in on the day they were released. I don't blame them. If I were a regular customer, had bought all of their offerings this year, and then was shut out of this due to high traffic I would be peeved too. Chris
1 Having a limit of less then 5 means more slow phone lines and computer crashes as there are more transactions. 2 Preordering for "valued" customers seems less fair to me. Say your a poor college student and can't afford all those expensive mint products. Or say your a big dealer that orders lots from the mint. Neither would not be fair. But posting a way for all to go for them seems the best.
