Looks like a struck thru grease. Post pics of your entire coin, Obv and Rev next time. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5707/struck-throughs/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/lets-see-some-struck-thru-grease-coins.219863/
Your coin was not struck properly due to the Die being filled with grease and or debris. It's common and not worth any extra. Welcome to CT.
Yep, I found an article on it last night. Probably a 1999 they had some issues. Thanks for the help everyone!
I've read about grease-filled dies on this forum numerous times and always wanted to ask a question. Why doesn't the tons of pressure during the minting process "dislodge" the grease? Just curious...
Good question. I'm not an expert on the minting process. Others here will chime in. I'm thinking because the pressure is so great and the strike is so fast. The slightest amount of debris or maybe dust could be struck into the surface of the coins. That's just my non-professional opinion. Don't take it to bank....... or mint!
Yes, I agree. I'm the same way. I hear (and I'm not 100% sure) the Mint production floor is almost like an industrial construction site! These crap everywhere!....tools, oil, grease, rags, dirt, spare parts, metal fragments, etc.. You name it it's there, even nails. That's the way I picture it.
