What do you think there could be in the minting process that could cause this?

A blank cut out of an entire roll of metal wouldn't look like this.

A blank going through the upsetting mill to become a planchet wouldn't look like this.

A planchet being fed into the coining chamber wouldn't look like this.

Dies are inspected before being put into service, and damage like this would cause the dies to be rejected before ever being used. Therefore, a struck coin wouldn't look like this.

    The answer is...........Nothing!
