I dont know about your dansco albums, but in mine, unless the coin comes out of the hole (which has happened to me once already) the plastic doesnt really touch the coin. The material that the coin sits in is slightly thicker than the coin so that when you slide the plastic in, it doesnt scratch the coin.

Storing coins in good holders, be that slabs, Air-Tites or whatever, by itself is not enough to prevent or slow down toning. If you do not follow proper storage proceedures as well, the coins are going to tone.

Another data point against Dansco albums: a friend of mine has a Dansco album filled with American Silver Eagles and when we checked it this weekend every single coin had extensive toning around the edges of the coin where it touched the album page. In some cases, the toning extended 2-3mm towards the center of the coin.

Based on this, I'm certainly not going to put my MS or proof coins in these albums.

Ok - with all this being said about the risk of damage to the high end coins being stored in albums (Im already screwed because this is how I have stored all my coins for years - and of course used white gloves to "push" them into the slots) what is the best way to store coins without them being slabbed?

Well I ask you this: How're your coins doing in the alblums? Are they toning? If not then you have probably stored them well...not to worry. I've done the same as you (white gloves and all) and don't see any problems.

The coins are doing well. I have them stored in Whitman deluxe albums and in a climate controlled area, room temp with a portable dehumidifier. Once inserted into the albums, they stay in the albums. The only thing I am concerned with is as I upgrade certain coins, I move the sliders back and forth. I try to be conscious when they slide across the coins, but its the hairline scratches that everyone mentions that I am now concerned with. On the flip side (no pun intended!), I collect for my own personal satisfaction and don't plan on slabbing the coins. I do, though, want my coins to be worth something years from now if I happen to sell them or my kids sell them years from now.
