Here,s one i was after for a long time, i knew the guy that owned it and Would check in with him every couple of months and this went on for About 4 years, until i finally got a maybe we talked about it, and the Strange thing about it, is he wanted an AR-15, so for $1,200 i got the One and only Series 641 $10 in 68PPQ , is this note rare, not by a long Shot as 22M were delivered but again it stands alone as the only 68
Certified notes are premium, of course. You have to understand mcpusa's unique passion for these. I bought three common notes certified PPQ 66 and 67 at the ANA convention in Dallas last year. I about $30, $40, and $50 them. I paid about a tenth of that for the circulated notes that I have. The market for these is very thin. If you are known and active in the sub-sub-genre, you know people who share your passions.
There is all levels of collecting with in the confines of MPC, i to started my Collection with raw un certified notes and then moved up the ladder to Investment grades abd the hard to find, but you dont have to break the Bank to get good Quality stuff, i will take a break from the more expensive Items and focus on the more affordable items.
So in moving on to the more affordable side of MPC,S , the least expensive from the 5 Cent to the $10 hands down has to be the Series 641, really good Average gem grades are cheap ! and if you want to go raw cheaper still Here,s some examples and approx values.
Here,s the 5 cent version in 68PPQ from my collection and the value is about $65, 66 or 67 grades would be in the $40 to $50 Range.
Here,s the 10 Cent version, since this is a top pop note, and in 69 the value would be multiplied substantially, so this one would be approx $350 where as a good 67,68 would be between $65 - $85
I do have a 68 in this but here,s one of my extras in 66 do give you an idea on a good quality note this one has a value of about $50 the 68 is a top pop and would be in the $275 range if your wondering.
here,s yet another top pop, and the value would be around $300 but you can great examples for around $90 or less
Speaking of which... I will say this, mpcusa, you do exemplify the virtues of the dedicated collector. In a stump speech that he gave back in the 1990s, Clifford Mishler said that any true collector, whether of coins, stamps, cards, or vinyl, pursues completeness, condition, and rarity.
That,s a great example, it just goes to show that you dont have to spend Allot to build a nice collection
In moving on to the dollar amounts, i actually have two to share on the Series 641 $1 on in 67PPQ worth between $95 - $105 and there is about 12 in population, but then we move to the heavy hitter the 68PPQ it Took me years to find this note at it is a top of pop and for that Reason would have a value of about $400.
This $5 example again like most of the others i have is a top pop, but you Can get lesser grades, i have seen some really good 64,s for a fraction So about $475 on this one have seen 64,s for under $180, whuch i believe To be a good value.
The Series 641 $10 is even a better value even though the 68 example is well over $1,200 as stated above you can Awesome deals on 67,s And below for around $300 and below and A/U examples for under $100
So the Series 641 above, is the easiest and least expensive to collect in both Raw and graded sets and this goes from the 5 cent all the way up to the $10 Note, so if you want to start collecting this is the Series to start with
The next Series in line i would have to say would be the Series 681 as all notes Are fairly inexpensive, the $5 thru $20 can be on the pricey side depending on The grade, but here again if you can find A/U grades you can save allot of money. This set actually won me an award from PCGS in 2013, and everything in It is a top pop.
Things got kind of turned around on the above...LOL, but everything is there In one form or another, kind of in a hurry, got get to work will post some Values tomorrow, so you can get an idea of costs.
While I am not really an active MPC collector, I would have loved to see that presentation. Some newer members may not have seen this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/engraved-mpc-designs-on-souvenir-cards.221756/ And here's one fun discovery I made while visiting DC last year. The arched sculptures on the Series 481 $1 MPC actually exist. You'll find them at the entrance to the Library of Congress.
