Inspired by my question in the MPC thread, I am going to start one on Military Numismatic Trivia. I am the moderator for the military numismatic trivia contest at the MPCFest. I and an assistant, Bill Myers, write the questions, ask them and serve as judges for the answers. The contest is head-to-head single elimination. This years final pitted Fred Schwan against Neil Shafer with Shafer emerging as the winner (his third championship). I will be posting questions from the MPCFest question set. These will cover anything found in WWII Remembered, the MPC Catalog or written about in the MPCGram. All will be about paper money. No prizes, just knowledge. Chime in with your answers. I will start with question that won it for Shafer this year. QUESTION: What British colony increased the size of its 5 shilling note issued during WWII due to complaints about its size from the citizens?
It is Southern Rhodesia. QUESTION: Who is the only US President pictured on a Philippine Guerrilla note?
QUESTION: What was the name of the military operation in which US yellow seal notes were first used? Correct. Operation Torch was the operational name given to the Allied invasion of North Africa where yellow seal notes were introduced. And since posts are useless without pictures, they will be posted with the answers from now on.
QUESTION: What type of previously issued US paper money was called back into service during WWII as emergency currency?
