I'm not happy with the photos, but I believe it's from a counting machine. As mentioned earlier, the date is recessed into the surface, so a scratch or 'ring' from the coin being damaged from another quarter in the counting machine will leave a line that looks like it's THRU and under the date, when actually it's ON the surface of the coin, above the sunken date. I leave myself a little opening if I saw better photos, but based on what I can see, it's a scrape.
A USB microscope works well but if you are serious get a mid level one b/c the $20-30 ones don't last(in my experience anyway).
How close are you wanting to get? I've found that my iphone camera takes decent pictures and you are able to zoom in and see most things without needing any fancy equipment.
I used my iPhone on the pics listed in this post, yet some members are having some trouble viewing the finer details of the picture.
