    Some (possibly) silly questions.

I know of a 1946 Mexico 50 Peso Gold that a friend has.

I tried on line and have seen many different answers.

Gold? ranged from pure (100%) to 90 %. any idea which is correct?

Weight I understand is either 1.2057 oz (?pure) or 1.257 oz. I also saw 1.20556 (coinflation)

So, I guess my real questions are:

How much gold is there in the piece?

    and 90 % or 100%? I am confused.

so, at the current $1207.30 gold, they value the piece at $1455.52

am I correct that the 1.20556 is pure gold?

    [just by multiplying $1207.30 X 1.20556= $1455.52]

    Thanks a bunch.

    I forgot to add:

Are there a lot of fakes of these things?

Is it worth getting it certified to be sure it is real?

I agree with the 1.20556 number. For all Mexican gold, I just remember 10 pesos is equal to our half eagle, ($5 gold piece). I do not know if we or them made it that way, but they weigh nearly identical in pure gold.

I imagine there are some fakes around, but I haven't seen many. THey had good production, so as long as weight is correct and the design looks like a match I wouldn't stress it too much. They are very pretty coins. Here is the one I bought.

In my Krause it says that:

1921-1947 are 90% with an AGW of 1.2056 oz. So that's the number I'd believe.

1946 is the highest mintage at 1,588,000.

I'd love to have one of these...beautiful coins.

    Thanks to both of you.

    Great info.

medoraman: I hope you didn't get yours at the top of the gold market.

Not the top but maybe $100 an ounce more than today. I don't give a rip, I bought it because I like the coin. I have some St Gaudens I got for $450 a piece, so I don't stress it if I like the coin. To me owning this coin is a consumable function. I get that much enjoyment owning it. If my kids sell it some day when dad kicks the bucket, good for them.

Eventually, once I snag a university teaching position, I'll start moving from foreign silver to foreign gold. For now though...I have to keep working my way up the ladder.

Yeah, I have considered that. My problem is I have too many interests. I collect ancients of many eras, ancient/medieval SE Asian, etc. I wish I could devote my "coin money" only to world gold, as I think it would be fun to collect, but am just spread too thin. I have a mexican gold type set, including the commemorative 10 pesos in the 50's, but not too much other world gold unless you count ancient Roman, Byzantine, Ostrogoths, etc.

90% Frank . They are basically the same as US gold in weight , if you double the Mexican coin . 2 peso = 1 dollar 10 peso = $5 20 peso = an Eagle and so on . but there's no equivalent to the 2 1/2 and 50 peso .
