In the 1930&#039;s, under the Lazaro Cardenas administration, a huge infrastructure project was initiated to link the nation&#039;s railways to the isolated Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatan. The result, the Ferrocarril del Sureste (Southeast Railroad) was completed in 1950 and inaugurate by then-president Miguel Aleman.
