When I am home which is not often I try to go out for an Hour every day. My Wife and I hunt together on the week ends. Mostly School yards and parks.
That's cool you and your wife hunt together. My gf has zero interest in this stuff. Fortunately, we both like to blow off steam by going to the driving range.
I have been thinking of buying a metal detector, Now i am definitely buying one! Probably won't find a thing like that but like roll searching you never know till you try. Regards, Stan
Been thinking about buying one. Around here theres alot of old ghost towns and pioneer trailheads....maybe i need one lol
I got a hit in my yard awhile back and after I dug about a foot into the ground, I realize it was metal siding! lol Talk about an odd find. I ended up leaving it and burying the piece back, but it's probably the oddest thing I've come across. No major coin finds, but I have found current coinage during my searches.
Just want to add one thing, to those wanting to get into metal detecting, be sure you know of the laws in your area. Some places are off limits, including gov't owned land and if you try taking a find with you from there, you could be arrested.
I haven't found lots of good stuff yet, but I have dug a silver quarter, a war nickel, and a few wheats plus this 1867 shield nickel w/stars and rays.
I've been metal detecting for about 25 years on and off. I bought a White's DFX a couple of years ago for my birthday and I've done quite well with it. Just at the end of last season, I found an early (1900's) 18K ring and a 22K gold chain. The two items sold for just over $800. My avatar is one of my earliest gold ring finds (which I still have). The oldest Canadian coin I've found is an 1870 quarter; my oldest coin to dates is an 8 Maravedies 1817 FERNANDO VII. I've been averaging about $50 in clad a month (consider the majority is pennies!) but it does help to have one and two dollar coins to help boost the total. With this hobby, you won't get rich but it's the thrill of the hunt and the outdoor activity that keeps you going!
That's definitely important. Where I'm at, by either local law or Federal law, every square inch of the city is off limits. Only out further into the states is it permissible.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is close to me. There are dozens of abandoned homesteads. The ranger said uh-uh to metal detecting. There's also an abandoned Nike missile site close by that's now part of the Cook County (Cook County, Chicago) Forest Preserve. There's an old runway and streets. The buildings are gone, but the foundations are still there. I would love to go metal detecting at both these places.
In a dream world, I would get PADI certified and buy a boat, move back to Florida, and get a high-end underwater metal detector!
anybody know if this is a good deal? COMPASS Relic Magnum 7. 8 inch coil & 12 inch relic coil. Includes carry bag, head phone and manual. $125.00
there is a nike missile site over in the bay too! (I vistied it on a field trip long ago) its really cool, and it is still well kept. (though it still will never fire a missle)
