That cellar was 8 years ago. Can't remember anything special. I don't keep a ledger of finds, maybe a note on a pic or two.
After being discharged from the service in the 70's a buddy and I used to spend weekends metal detecting, mostly old cellar holes. We would locate old maps that showed the locations of houses and then compare them to USGS maps. Where there was a house and now nothing, that is where we went. Like Tom said, getting landowner permission can be a challenge but enough of them told us to go ahead. Over the years I found many metal artifacts and coins, none of which are worth a lot. One site in particular was productive - a long ago water powered mill. We found several large cents and below a very old shade tree I found several early nickels. Next time I have the camera fired up I'll take a few pictures. The bottle collections of some of the posters are truly remarkable, as is the case with the tokens and metal objects!
The USGS maps are a staple for me. A lot of work cobbing them together as they come in four sheets but I have about 20 of them now, all put together and laminated.
possibly 60's matchbox an early series. they started out by numbering them. There was an earlier brand maybe stared with an L?
Lol. Was hoping it was a huge cache... took 30 mins to dig it out of water and gravel by a river... you can imagine my disappointment.
I went yesterday, with my son, and brother. Part fishing was a good day! My son and I found some gun shells and one unspent 45 lead. I will search there again. an old mine site. My seven year old caught his first trout Drifting a salmon egg! Proud of him!
