Absolutely love this coin! A 1943 Mercury dime was one of the first silver coins i added to my early collection. A very generous neighbor gave it to me from his collection because he knew that this young kid had an interst in coins. It'll never be worth more than melt, but i'll never get rid of it! 34 years later i'm still going strong, and nothing gets my heart beating faster than finding one of these in a roll of dimes!
The 1916 S: And 1917: By my guess it's middle to high fine, but the reverse has a unique lavendar tone to it that I hardly ever see on coins. Let's see if I captured it correctly. 1917 D is for the taking. We sure don't see many of these circulated beauties on the forum. Thanks for letting me share.
I'm currently reading the book, 100 Greatest U.S. Coins - Third Edition, written by Jeff Garrett. He has the coin ranked as the 45th greatest. It is a pretty good book with lots of very nice pics. If your curious, he ranked the 1913 V nickel as #1.
I understand that the model for Liberty was Elsie Stevens, wife of the famous poet Wallace Stevens. One of my favorite coin designs. I hope this one does Elsie justice:
