Meow was curious to its value and looked it up on ebay. They seem to be asking about in the $20 range. Meow did also find this BS https://www.ebay.com/itm/134048135273?hash=item1f35e43869:g:yxcAAOSw~WViKEBq
It does seem, anecdotally, that planchets for higher value coins are less commonly found. We see a lot of cents, but the mint has used them as filler jn sets, given them out on tours, and even put them into the kid's set of a few years back. If nothing else, it is cool and fun and seems to meet Meow's definition of the Cat Hoard (TM): cool or fun or unusual stuff that makes Meow happy. I'm with Meow on this one... I find it interesting how rough the surface is and yet could have made a nice smooth coin. *I* would not kick it out of the collection even if it had a little sand on its paws!
As others have said, it's an unstruck planchet. You may also see these called a type 2 Planchet since it's been through the upset mill. Great find! As to value, check the eBay sold listings. I think it might be in the $10-20 range since it's a larger denomination, but I am not up on current pricing Some info from error-ref for those that think it's PMD https://www.error-ref.com/?s=Blank+planchet
Magnets do not stick to coins. Coins that are Ferromagnetic stick to magnets. Meaning that the magnet will attract the ferromagnetic coin such as a Steel Cent.. And thanks for finally posting the pictures. Nice Blank Planchet.
The curious thing is that it’s not clad - just copper. It does look like a planchet as others have noted. But all copper?
I guess I had it in my head from your first post that it was copper...which sounded like a copper slug. I've found those in the past...knockouts from something.
MeowtheKitty, posted: "OK, Meow still cannot find the USB Cat Camera still. It is lost in the Cat Hoard. So, the best Meow can do for now is a lame picture from the Cat Phone. View attachment 1468514 View attachment 1468515 Moo, Bark, and Hiss the snake say this looks like a blank planchet. Moo, Oink, Hiss, and Bark wonder who posted this? You forgot to write "Meow" somewhere in the post. Oink the pig says "Ditto." Moo, Bark, Hiss, and Baah, the sheep think perhaps Meow is the kitty is beginning to turn into a mature cat.
Meow is our friend. We all have our own way to communicate - just as the birds, bees, etc. While I'm having fun posting as Meow does, as our favorite non-human, I prefer to read posts from Mr. Giraffe.
