My father's brother was a Marine who died on Iwo Jima in 1945. After 65 years, my father only recently went through the letters and other effects that related to his brother. Here is a link to a story that appeared in Sunday's LaCrosse (Wis.) Tribune about my father and the relationship with his brother. http://www.lacrossetribune.com/news/local/article_6430e11e-6aac-11df-9dc4-001cc4c03286.html?mode=story One of the letters to my father mentioned that a $5.00 bill was enclosed. Since my uncle was in the Pacific, I assumed it was a Hawaii note. Before I could ask, my father mentioned that he remembered the note and he remembered that it said Hawaii on it. My father kept the note and hid it in a model airplane in his room. In 1947, the family moved and the model airplane was thrown away by my grandfather with the $5.00 note still in it. I found a decent $5.00 Hawaii note at the N.O.W. show in Iola last week that I gave to my father to replace the one he lost 60+ years ago. Below is a scan of a $5.00 Hawaii note. It is (probably) not the one my father lost (although you never know) and it is not the one I gave him, either, as I neglected to scan it before I gave it to him.
