I've seen many posts about people collecting pennies for the copper inside of them, so I did some searching around the internet, and found a news article stating that melting pennies and nickels down is now illegal.

The article is from December 2006.

I have read the story and thanks for the info. I wonder the story has posted on 2006 and it is not big news. I think this is absolutely irrelevant to today’s scenario.

Well, that's what I was wondering, and this is also the most recent info I could find on the illegality of it. Maybe next I'll look for the legality of it.

even though it's illegal, how would he law know you melted them down?

They wouldn't, unless you somehow gave evidence of the act, or someone reported you. The risk isn't worth it for me. I would stockpile them however. If I sold the pennies as is, that's a completely different story I think. I'll let someone else take that fall.

I would be afraid of getting caught. I don't think I would have been able to melt them down.
