$2-5 There are people who collect these and would know if it's a rare variety or anything. But, like Treashunt said, they're fairly common. Were often used as tokens or markers in whist and other card games of the period (kind of like a dealer button is used in Texas Hold 'em today).
What is the diameter? I have a reference on hand for eagle and double eagle size counters, but I am expecting references for the smaller denominations any day now.
I'm a big believer in buying the book before buying the coin. What are the 2 references you mention for this series?
The reference I like most is Fauver's American Counters, Part 1, Double Eagle & Eagle Gold (1983). I have been looking for the other Parts for years, and I just recently found the rest of the set and ordered them (still waiting for their arrival). There were 5 more books that I ordered: 1. Half Eagle Gold 2. Three Dollar & Quarter Eagle Gold 3. One Dollar Gold & One Dollar Silver 4. Minor Denominations & Misc. 5. Latin America & Canada In addition to Fauver's book, I also have the following references on gaming counters: 1. (1981) The Casting-Counter and the Counting Board, F.P. Barnard 2. (1972) U.S. & English Counter, TAMS Journal Vol. 12, # 6 3. (1974) English Card Counters, Spiel Marken, Tams Journal Vol. 14, # 4 4. (1952) Revised List of American Game Counters, Howard H. Kurth 5. (????) The Counters of Nuremberg, O.P. Eklund 6. (1994) Handbook For Gaming Token Collectors, Don and Jean
