I've never seen the sense of a 1:2 value ratio in coins. It's easier to deal with three quarters than a quarter and a half. It would be easier to deal with three nickels than a nickel and a dime if the nickel weren't oversized.

Quarters, dollars, half-eagles, double eagles. I'd ask for unions ($100), but apparently we aren't to be trusted with large denominations -- even the $100 bill is under attack.

But, as I always say, we'll see the end of cash before we'll see any meaningful coinage reform.

Political will probably won't be there to eliminate the cent until price of zinc makes it profitable to melt them. It will happen eventually; inflation won't stop. Then there will be no choice unless we go to plastic cents.

The massive melting of all those zinc cents in drawers, jars, boxes, etc. might make for some interesting changes in numismatic values. I wouldn't try to predict it though.

Not only will I not be able to say "not worth a red cent"

I also won't be able to say:

    "put my two cents in"
    "not worth a plug nickle"
    "give my ten cents worth"

We will more likely see the end of the US dollar as we know it before any meaningful changes were to occur. But the way that our ineffectual legislatures are we will see nothing but partisan bickering on other matters.

I'm still betting the dollar will outlast cash, but we'll see. (Maybe. I figure I've got at least another three decades if I'm not stupid or unlucky, five if healthcare makes some good progress; I'm not sure cash will make it that long.)

Well with all the lack of legislative progress in healthcare we will all be dead soon. Soylent Green anyone?

My thought has always been to drop the cent and the five cent coins and produce a copper 3 cent coin (small about the size of the old 3 cent to cover transactions. If your purchase is $1.01, it drops to $1 and if your purchase is $1.02 it goes to $1.03. If $1.04, it goes to $1.03 (use the 3 cent coin) and if $1.05 it goes to $1.06. If $1.07 it goes to $1.06 and if $1.08, it goes to $1.09. Look at the money that the government would save and people won't think they got hooked by 2 cents.

1973. It is so old, Edward G. Robinson was in it. Chuck Heston too!

not to be too stuck on this, but if it's $1.05, why not just keep it $1.05 and pay with a dollar and a nickel?

But there are lots of movies from "before our times" that we know well. They're called classics. ;) For example, Soylent Green is a pub and bar in Cologne (NW, DE) - and they would not have picked that name if people had no idea about it ...

I'm never not amazed at how many American cultural icons that people in even less trodden places in Europe know about. Even music artists.

I think when I saw it they used hand puppets, or finger shadows, or something.

Doesn't work well without the penny. If the bill is $1.08, which rounds to $1.09 then what happens if $1.10 is tendered: $0.01 change is due. Also if the bill is $1.00 and 33 3 cents coins are tendered.
