I have these two coins one is red in color the other is dark brown can anyone tell me if these are missing layers
Environmental damage. The coatings on these coins (the clad layer) is nickel and copper. I get these metal detecting all the time. The soil/ air/ water/ salts etc destroy the outer layer. The sand really chews them up. So if you dug these out of the ground, they are just quarters.
First let me say welcome to CT. What I can see it's environmental damage this thread may help you out a lot. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/environmental-damage-or-works-of-art.289634/ USMC60
Thanks man I'm new so don't know much they were so solid colored on both sides and each one weighed 6 grams other quarters that were normal weighed 5
Yes to environmental damage. Missing clad layer Mint errors usually occur on just one side of a coin. Here are some examples from my collection -
@Dv8one Here is an example of one that never saw circulation. The 2001 Kennedy half dollars weren't released into circulation until 2004 when the Mint decided to sell $100 Mixed P&D bags. I found this in one of those bags. Chris
The quarters should weigh closer to 5.67 grams, and the silver quarters 6.25. There is some +/- weight tolerance allowed. I have a digital scale which only goes to tenths (5.6 or 5.7). But it is very accurate and many go to hundredths or thousandths of a gram. I use mine for weighing coins, and silver.
Thank all of you you have been very helpful I am glad I joined up as a newbie to coin collecting I was a little bit scared to ask any questions you all have been very helpful and made me feel comfortable thanks again
