I picked this up the other day. No special reason. I just liked the look and style of it and got it fairly cheap. Obverse: GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES Laureate head right. Divergent wreath ties with pointed ends. Reverse: GENIO CA-ESARIS Genius standing facing, head left, wearing modius on head, chlamys across left shoulder, right hand holding out a patera from which liquid flows, left arm holding a cornucopia behind. Field Marks: K in left field, Δ over P in right field. Exergue: ALE Reference: RIC VI Alexandria 99a.
I have a small collection of the coins of MIID from Alexandria. Not really sure why but it's happened that way. Yours is nicer than mine from this issue. Nice pickup.
Nice one, @randygeki ! I like that chocolate-brown patina. The reverse is better struck than on mine. Here's one of MIID as Augustus from the Antioch mint: Maximinus II Daza, AD 309-313, as Augustus. Roman Æ follis, 21.4 mm, 4.88 g, 12 h. Antioch, AD 312. Obv: IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, laureate head, right. Rev: GENIO AVGVSTI, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, holding head of Sol and cornucopiae; *|Z //ANT. Refs: RIC 164b; Cohen 21; RCV 14840.
Me, too. Notice that we each have a different officina but I do not know the meaning of the KP that separates these from other issues. Anyone? Does anyone care about parallel vs. divergent wreath ties? I am not a specialist in these and have only this one. Notice mine has liquid pouring from the patera. There are many things that specialist will study that many of us will ignore.
@dougsmit , Yours is the GENIO IMPERATORIS rather then the GENIO CAESARIS. Like mine..... Hmmm. Do I have an Officina S thing going on???? I need to look.
@Roman Collector At Alexandria they have the equivalent holding Serapis head type.I have a few. This is probably my nicest. Maximinus II Daia - Follis Obv:– IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– GENIO AVGVSTI, Genius, naked but for chlamys fastened at his right shoulder and hanging from his left shoulder, standing facing, head left, wearing modius, holding head of Serapis, which faces him, in right hand and ornate cornucopia in left arm behind Minted in Alexandria (* / N / Branch | B / ALE). A.D. 312-313 Reference:– RIC VI Alexandria 160b
Of course Antioch has it's own holding head of Serapis type. Maximinus II Daia - Follis Obv:– IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– SOLI IN-VICTO, Sol standing left in long robe, right hand raised, left hand holding head of Serapis Minted in Antioch (A | * // ANT). A.D. 312 Reference(s) – RIC VI Antioch 167b
Nice one, Randy. My Max II from Alexandria is a Genius with Serapis's head like Martin's. MAXIMINUS II AE Follis. 5.1g, 21mm. Alexandria mint, AD 312-313. RIC VI Alexandria 160b. O: IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, laureate head right. R: GENIO AVGVSTI, Genius standing left holding head of Serapis left in right hand, cornucopia in left; star, N and palm-branch in left field, gamma in right, ALE in exergue.
It's also worth looking out for the BONO reverse legend variety. Maximinus II Daia - Follis Obv:– IMP C GALER VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– BONO GENIO PII IMPERATORIS, Genius, naked but for chlamys fastened at his right shoulder and hanging from his left shoulder, standing facing, head left, wearing modius, holding patera in right hand and ornate cornucopia in left arm behind Minted in Alexandria (Crescent / K | Gamma / X // ALE). 1) Maximin Daia AE Follis, GENIO IMPERATORIS, Cyzicus mint 2) Maximin Daia AE Follis, GENIO AVGVSTI, Alexandria mint, head of Serapis
What a fantastic array of Maximinus II coins in this thread! I seem to have gathered quite a few from Alexandria, not sure I can justify keeping them all. Plus a keeper from Antioch. As Caesar, Alexandria, GENIO CAESARIS As Caesar, Antioch, GENIO CAESARIS As Augustus, Alexandria, BONO GENIO PII IMPERATORIS As Augustus, Alexandria, head-on-a-platter As Augustus, Alexandria, GENIO IMPERATORIS
Here's another CAESARIS with the K-P field marks from officina B. Our fourth officina for that type I believe: I have another one for officina gamma I got for $15 from Harlan Berk in 1997, but you can imagine that at that price it's not worth showing. I have a few others but no pics. Sorry.
I have an earlier CAESARIS... (P / D | R // ALE). Mid A.D. 308. RIC VI Alexandria 71 Here is one of the earlier Serapis head coins from the series. (X | A // ALE). A.D. 312. RIC VI Alexandria 149b Which moved on to this one... (Crescent / X | B // ALE). A.D. 312. RIC VI Alexandria 152b I have a couple more RIC VI Alexandria 160b examples (* / N / Branch | Gamma // ALE) (* / N / Branch | S // ALE) And the slightly later RIC VI Alexandria 162b (* / N / Branch | Z / Wreath // ALE)
