Nice job on the capture...love that Ebon Patina! I only have ONE of this Juttin'-Jawed Dude: RI Maximinus Thrax 235-238 CE AR Denarius Victory stndg Obv-Rev.jpg
Wonderful example. I just have silver. Maximinus (235 - 238 A.D) AR Denarius O: MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM, Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: PAX AVGVSTI, Pax standing facing, head left, holding olive branch and transverse scepter. 20mm 3.1g Rome RIC 019 RSC 037
LOVE that big bronze!!!! I scored a Max Jr sestertius sometime back but I only have the typical silver version of Max Sr---although of high relief for the type:
We seem to have to pay more the uglier Maximinus got. Yours is nasty in a very good way. I suppose if you want handsome you might go for son Maximus but you can see the family resemblance coming through.
I do have one sestertius of his, but it is in the safe deposit box and I don't have a photo of it. So, just two observations: 1. I think Maximinus may be an ancestor of Quentin Tarantino. 2. "Maximinus Thrax" would make an excellent name for a heavy metal band.
Wow Roman Collector, that's a very sweet OP-Thrax (congrats) Hmmm, Thrax ... yup, I've got myself one humble silver example (wanna see it?)
Nice coins, this Emperor is really special for many reasons/ his coins are inexpensive/ avaliable in FDC quality/ interesting portrait....unfortunately Aurei of his are very expensive
That chin almost looks like something from a Pixar movie! I also like the snake-feeding motif on the reverse.
Maximinus Thrax is one of my favorite emperors. His denarii are usually very well made--well-engraved, well-centered, and with dies with little wear. Also, many are "fresh" -- in high grade. The quality of his denarii is better on average than most other emperors. Here is the first coin on my site: It is in the first of three portrait styles. Probably struck March-May 235. 20-18 mm, BMC 25. Sear 8317v, with early style as opposed to the big chin illustrated in Sear.
