An emperor I needed & preferred the Antoninianus then Follis. Maximian, (286 - 305, 306 - 308, and 310 A.D) Ӕ Antoninianus O: IMP C MA MAXIMIANVS PF AVG , radiate , draped bust right . R: CONCORDIA MILITVM , Jupiter presents Victory on globe to Maximianus . Officina Δ between . XXI in ex . Heraclea Mint 31mm 3.6g RIC V, 595, Cohen 54.
Very nice example of the type. I just posted mine in Pish's thread, but you can't have enough Maximian...
MAXIMIANUS AR Argenteus OBVERSE: MAXIMIANVS AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: VIRTVS MILITVM, four tetrarchs sacrificing before walls with 6 turrets Struck at Ticinum, 295 AD 2.6g, 18mm RIC VI 18b
I don't have a really nice follis of Maximianus but for some reason have more ants of his than of Diocletian. Why???
I have this follis of Maximian, but I'm very angry with it. The patina is so thick and glossy that I can't get any sort of good image of it. At the same time, it's quite beautiful in hand. I really hate this coin.
Nice style for the portrait. Cool addition. I prefer an ant. to a follis as well(not that I have a nice one).
By coincidence I posted this coin in another recent Maximianus thread at the same time Mat was posting his new thread. This antoninianus was languishing in a pile of mixed lot coins I never got around to studying. I'm not good with attributing these later Roman coins, relying almost solely on Wildwinds. Hopefully this one is correct. Maximianus CE 286-305 Antioch AE antoninianus, 22 mm, 3.9 gm Obv: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, radiate cuirassed bust right Rev: CONCORDIA MILITVM, Jupiter presents Victory on a globe to Maximianus, H between, XXI in exergue Ref: RIC VI 621 H
solid example of the type mat! i'm pretty short on coins of maximian, i don't have an ant but i have a tet..
Handsome addition to the collection, Mat, I especially like the bust. Even though I've ever only bought one of his coins as a stand alone, it seems I've managed to collect seven of them. Lovely silvered follis courtesy of my 2014 Cointalk Secret Santa... MAXIMIANUS Silvered Follis 10.3g, 29.6mm Cyzicus mint, AD 297-299 AD RIC VI Cyzicus 12b O: IMP C M A MAXIMIMANVS P F AVG, laureate head right. R: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left pouring libation from patera & holding cornucopiae, KE in ex. Abdication issue from a mixed lot... MAXIMIANUS, as Senior Augustus AE Follis 10.17g, 29.2mm Aquileia mint, AD 305-306 RIC VI Aquileia 63b O: D N MAXIMIANO BAEATISSIMO SEN AVG, laureate bust right, wearing imperial mantle, holding olive branch and mappa.
