Finally got a Maxentius coin! MAXENTIUS, FOLLIS, 306-312 AD O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head right R: CONSERVE VRB SVAE, Roma seated left in tetrastyle temple presenting globe to Maxentius, captive seated between; wolf and twins in pediment, Victories each holding a wreath as acroteria. Mintmark AQP, Aquilea mint, RIC:113 25 mm, 6.1g. I was kind of wanting to get one from Ostia from this a guy, a mint city I don't have, but really liked the temple will extra features, (there's a Roma only variety as well). A nice hint of silvering left as well. What does the reverse mean exactly? "Preserving his city"...I don't get the SVAE. "He preserves his city"? Feel free to post coins from Maxentius or anything from Aquilea!
Great example! Maxentius (306 - 312 A.D.) Æ Follis O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, laureate bust right. R: VICTORIA AETERNA AVG N, Victory advancing left with wreath & palm. In ex. MOSTT 6.70g Ostia mint RIC 54
That is a really nice example Chris. I only have one of his. Destined for the soup eventually. Maxentius Coin: Bronze Follis IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG - Laureate head right CONSERV VRB SVAE - Roma seated facing, head left, within hexastyle temple, holding globe and sceptre; wreath in pediment Mint: AQUILIEAI (307 ad) Wt./Size/Axis: 6.91g / 23mm / - References: RIC 116
Great job @chrsmat71 ! Nice to fill in the Emperors! MAXENTIUS: RI Maxentius 306-312 CE AE Folles Dioscuri holding their horses She-Wolf AQUILEA - Flavius Victor RI Flavius Victor 384-388 CE AE4 14mm 1-8g Aquileia Camp Gate Star SMAQS RIC IX 55b-2 LRBC1104
Cool temple reverse! Good choice going for the ensemble cast version rather than just ol Roma sitting in it alone. I hope it doesn't stop you from getting an Ostia mint issue at some point too.
While mine is Rome mint and damaged, Maxentius' son Romulus comes in an Ostia version which would be good for filling several holes in many collections. If the desire is just any Ostia, the easy answer is Constantine I.
I don't know if this is a satisfactory explanation for the "suae" in the legend, but Maxentius's claim to power pretty much originated in Rome. Diocletian had ended the tax exemption for the home city of the empire, and Romans were eager to back someone who might restore that exemption. The Praetorian Guard were also early supporters. Maxentius also had a pretty elaborate palace complex just off the Appian Way that can still be visited today, including its own hippodrome. For these reasons, perhaps he regarded Rome as "his" city. But since I do not know who else might have struck this reverse type, my explanation should be taken with a mica salis. Nice coin BTW. Here is mine.
I have a few of Maxentia. Here is the one in the best condition. MAXENTIUS BILLION FOLLIS RIC VI. Rome 202a I even have a 'beat up' one from Ostia. (Similar to Alegandron's) MAXENTIUS RIC VI. Ostia 016
VERY NICE @chrsmat71 !!! I LOVE the reverse!!! There are already so many cool posts of Maxentius so I'll add one more of his son Romulus; AE Follis of Romulus; Ostia mint, Circa 309-312 AD 6.09 grams 25 mm; 2nd officina, Ist emission? Bare head right,DIVO ROMVLO NV BIS CONS Domed roofed Shrine, right door ajar, surmounted by eagle AETERNAE MEMORIAE MOSTS RIC 34
ROMULUS: I think this is in his GEEK phase!!! RI Romulus 310-311 CE AE25 Domed Shrine doors ajar with sm Eagle
@chrsmat71 Hey Chris, if you are still after a Maxentius 'Ostia', would you like mine? No charge. P.M. me if you would.
Thanks for the comments everyone...and the offer TC! Cool coins everybody! I didn't even remember he had a kid named Romulus! Well, somebody else to put on the list. So that tomb on his coin still stands, I'll be darned. Pretty cool. (wikipedia)
In this thread I suggest that the round Maxentian family mausoleum is what is pictured on the Romulus coin: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/maxentius-and-his-relatives.295068/#post-2718344 But I know this building in the Forum is the usual suspect.
3rd officina for me: And my Romulus Ostia (still haven't been brave enough to try Verdicare on it, or on anything... yet.) Neat info on the possible building!
