    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

    Finally got a Maxentius coin!

    GetImage.jpg

    MAXENTIUS, FOLLIS, 306-312 AD

O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head right
R: CONSERVE VRB SVAE, Roma seated left in tetrastyle temple presenting globe to Maxentius, captive seated between; wolf and twins in pediment, Victories each holding a wreath as acroteria. Mintmark AQP, Aquilea mint, RIC:113
    25 mm, 6.1g.

I was kind of wanting to get one from Ostia from this a guy, a mint city I don't have, but really liked the temple will extra features, (there's a Roma only variety as well). A nice hint of silvering left as well.

What does the reverse mean exactly? "Preserving his city"...I don't get the SVAE. "He preserves his city"?

Feel free to post coins from Maxentius or anything from Aquilea!

Cool temple reverse! Good choice going for the ensemble cast version rather than just ol Roma sitting in it alone.

I hope it doesn't stop you from getting an Ostia mint issue at some point too.

While mine is Rome mint and damaged, Maxentius' son Romulus comes in an Ostia version which would be good for filling several holes in many collections.

If the desire is just any Ostia, the easy answer is Constantine I.

MAXENTIUS CONSERVATOR 1.jpeg I don't know if this is a satisfactory explanation for the "suae" in the legend, but Maxentius's claim to power pretty much originated in Rome. Diocletian had ended the tax exemption for the home city of the empire, and Romans were eager to back someone who might restore that exemption. The Praetorian Guard were also early supporters. Maxentius also had a pretty elaborate palace complex just off the Appian Way that can still be visited today, including its own hippodrome. For these reasons, perhaps he regarded Rome as "his" city. But since I do not know who else might have struck this reverse type, my explanation should be taken with a mica salis.

Nice coin BTW. Here is mine.
