Okay, it's Monday again. Nice for us homebodies but the workers out there I can relate to, back in the day anyways. Enough of the small talk. Do you own a recently acquired Mint State coin or one that's been buried in your collection? Get it out and post it please.... Thanks! Here's my common 1938D Buffalo Nickel MS66.
So is this thread about mint marks or mint state coins? I'm confused a bit. Here is one of my favorite dimes. I submitted this West Point minted example to NGC..
To me the most interesting 19th century mint marks were on the obverse, above the date. The mint system only did this in 1838 and '39. In 1840, the mint marks moved to the reverse. Here are sample coins from each mint which existed at that time. Charlotte, North Carolina. 1839 was the first year for the Coronet design on the $5 gold piece. This coin is quite scarce. Dahlonega, Georgia. The Dahlonega Mint opened in 1838. The $5 gold piece was the only coin the mint produced that year. The mint personal were proud of their product and made an extra effort to make it well. New Orleans, Louisiana. The New Orleans Mint had problems in 1838 which limited it's output. This was the only gold coin the facility produced in 1839.
