I recently came into a deal on an older album of a Mardi Gras doubloon collection, in addition to about 100 loose ones. The first batch some are from an interesting assortment of groups some from parades other than Mardi Gras, Like St. Patties day, navy, other civic groups, business I don't know if they allow any parade floats other than the Krewes and groups in. Off course since there will be more than one person standing on the side of the route the politicians have gotten in the act with doubloons. reverses the same
Wow I didn't know these were worth anything. I used to have a bunch and I think I tossed them at some point...
Well it depends as with a lot of collectables, The market is buyer's willing to pay based. Generally they go for $1.00/3.00 retail each. A lot of times they are fillers in the LCS bargain bin. 100 doubloons with shipping for $30.00 or so.
Couple from the Navy, Don't know if they had a float or just passed them out. Haven't seen any for the other branches of the service yet.
I've seen some Air Force recruiting tokens but none I could say for certain were Mardi Gras specific.
A couple of interesting throws this one from a river gate mess in downtown NOLA. Casino's,money and politico's interesting reading on google The next one is also interesting on how it got started and their name."One of the group was a part owner of the Imperial Laundry. He suggested they make use of some convict suits from the Atmore Prison Farm that had just been washed and cleaned. There were no hats or masks with the suits, so they purchased Chinese coolie hats and masks from a street vendor and proceeded to parade on foot ..." Mobile ALA
So I spent my ebucks last night. In a search for a token I saw an Air Force Mardi Gras recruiting token dated 1975. I almost bought it but instead went for a 5 cent token from Clark AB as I don't have one in that denomination yet.
Yep, I have about 20,000 or so, but it pales in comparison to my old mans collection which is essentially complete and has well over 1,000,000 total pieces. This is my haul from this past Mardi Gras. I have tons of duplicates, so if anybody wants some, send me a PM with your shipping details and I'll send some out to you.
I'm a member of the Italian American marching club. We are the only parade that still goes down Bourbon street. The others have become so large that they can't do it anymore.
Nice stash! What I like about them, Is they are small groups of like minded people generally carrying on a great tradition, along with interesting stories of their founding or naming.
