A thread in which to post your doubloons and stories of Mardi Gras. I was born in New Orleans in 1963 (sorry about that world!). Going to see the parades as a kid was, in short, awesome! In particular I have vivid memories of flambeaus and the many parades including Bacchus, Hermes, Endymion, Pegasus, Elks, Crescent City, Pete Fountain's Half-fast Walking Club. And of course Rex, King of Carnival! I believe the Rex krewe started throwing dated doubloons in 1960 (what I refer to as the beginning of the modern era of throws). My oldest doubloon... 1964 Rex Gold Anodized Aluminum Doubloon - Obverse... Reverse... Flambeau carriers... p.s. I hope the links persist - too lazy to quote them in their entirety.
Doubloons are grossly underrated as a collectible. They are a lot of fun with numerous rarities, scarcities and highly desirable issues that are difficult to find or sometimes common. There's just something for everyone in these douboons. And this is why they'lleventually be "found". There are many people who don't even collect doubloons who know certain issues exist and are seeking them. Many people collect "themes" and almost every theme has at least one doubloon. My favorites are the advertising issues of which thousands exist. I do enjoy collecting them all and specialize in five or six krewes.
I collect specific themes that are on Mardi Gras Doubloons: * Owls * Lincoln (incl. Mr. Rushmore) * Jewish / Bible * Disney & Disney Characters * From the TV & Movies, especially Star Trek Do you want to see some pics...?
I know for sure I am missing some. Especially the Owls. As you can see, I collect all the tokens in their different colors. I have never seen any of the themes I collect that are made from any other metal (like bronze, copper or silver), other than aluminum. Does anyone have any that I'm still missing from my collection?
Cool thread. I went to the parades about ten years ago and I ought to get 'em out and take some photos. Cool collections everyone. @OdedPaz I would like to see your Star Trek ones.

I have a couple of Doubloons by the Italian-American marching club. One has Rocky Marciano on it and the other has Rocky Graziano. Large numbers of Sicilians and Italians immigrated to New Orleans in the late 1890s to the 1920s .
