Also, i was just reading up, the Sestertius came from the collection of Alexander Krombach ... who in 2008 after buying some coins on Ebay had his entire coin collection confiscated by the Germany authorities.. The prosecution asked for him to forfeit his collection + pay 1000 Euros... to which he refused.. http://www.coinsweekly.com/en/Coin-collecting-in-Hesse/4?&id=176 http://www.coinsweekly.com/en/Archi...mbach-case--Coins-Restituted/8?&id=747&type=n He supposedly won the case in 2010 + it took 3 years from when he first had his coins confiscated until the coins were finally returned to him in 2011.
Nice group of Aurelius'! My first purchase from @John Anthony was this "Golden Boy"... RI Aurelius Marcus 161-180 AE Sestertius S-C Then, Frank turned me on to some silver... RI Aurelius Marcus 161-180 AE Sestertius S-C
The high grade and cabinet toning on that first denarius are lovely. I rather like the blackish patina on that sestertius, as well.
I've got a couple of sestertii of M. Aurelius, one commemorating his victory over the Parthians and one calling him the Restorer of Italy:
What a nightmare! They're all lovely but the sestertius is one I want to reach out and touch My first MA was a sestertius. It's a "problem" coin purchased in my first months of collecting. I can't explain why I bought it other than it made me laugh (the eagle looks like a scrawny chicken standing atop an egg) and it is supposedly rare. Marcus Aurelius posthumous issue struck under Commodus in CE 180 sestertius; 27 mm, 22.8 gm. Rome Obv: DIVVS M ANTONINVS PIVS, bare head right Rev: CONSECRATIO / S-C, eagle with spread wings on globe, facing, head left Ref: RIC 656 (Commodus) Marcus Aurelius Sestertius; 31 mm, 24 gm; struck AD 173, Rome mint Obv: laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: Mercury standing left on pedestal, holding caduceus and purse (it looks more like a patera to me); within temple with figural columns (telamones); on semicircular pediment, tortoise (unfortunately worn on this coin), cockerel, ram, caduceus, winged helmet, and purse; S-C across fields; RELIG AVG in exergue Ref: RIC III 1074; MIR 18, 258-6/37; Banti 260 Zumbly's nice writeup of the type is here. A couple of Alexandrians: EGYPT, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius year 12, CE 171/2 AE diobol, 22 mm, 7.53 gm Obv: [MAV]PHΛIOC ANTω[ΝΙΝΟCCE]; laureate bust right Rev: Uraeus serpent erect left, wearing headdress; "holding" sistrum and grain ear; LI - B across upper fields Ref: Dattari 3605 and Pl. XXXII, 3605 (this coin). Dattari-Savio Pl. 193, 3605 (this coin); Geissen --; Emmett 2260.12, R5 ex Dattari collection (Giovanni Dattari, 1858-1923) EGYPT, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius as Caesar AE obol, 20.5 mm, 6.0 gm. Alexandria. Year 15 (CE 151/2) Obv: MAVPHΛICKAICAP; bust right, bare head Rev: Sphinx crouched right; LIE (date) above in left field Ref: Emmett 1919.15, R5; Dattari 3221; RPC IV online 15684 I'd love to get a youthful portrait denarius of MA, preferably with Antoninus Pius on the obverse. Apparently a bunch of other people would too.
VERY NICE EVERYONE!!! Here's a denarius I recently picked up---mainly because it was VERY cheap and I have surprisingly few examples of M Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius AD 161-180. Rome Denarius AR 17mm., 3,19g. M ANTONINVS AVG ARMENIACVS; laureate head right / P M TR P X-X IMP III COS III; Roma seated left on shield, holding Victory with right hand and spear with left.
Thank you for these coins. They are so rich in history. (My guest, but not my photos. Presented before.)
I have a few of mine photographed; but still haven't shot my other Antoninus/Marcus double bust denarii. -Michael
Ask @John Anthony , and if he doesn't have one, my second choice would be www.coolcoins.com which is owned by the wonderful @Ken Dorney . If none of them have one to fit your budget, the dealer of last resort that I would recommend is www.ancientimports.com . If you can't find what you are looking for by that point, I don't know what to say except wait a month and try again.
Marcus Aurelius as Augustus, AD 161-180 Roman AR denarius; 3.30 gm Rome, AD 180 Obv: M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind Rev: TR P XXXIIII IMP X COS III P P, Victory alighting left on globe, holding wreath and trophy Refs: RIC 411 var (draped and cuirassed); BMCRE 808; Cohen 975; MIR 463; Sear 4952.
Youthful with Pius solid same but fourree (part of the AK group from Triton XX) My favorite young Aurelius is this Alexandria drachm with Nike from year 8 (LH). If he only had a nose... If only I could find it in Emmett (page 84???). What am I missing here?
