Cool posts, everyone. I almost pulled the trigger on a Marcus Aurelius coin a couple of months ago, but my wife is keeping a close watch on my coin purchases. Still waiting to get one. I'm in the middle of reading his "Meditations." Should have bought the paper copy instead of reading it on my Nook. I'm old school, really like to mark up my books instead of digitally trying to find a passage. Steve

Happy Birthday, Marcus Aurelius. Just got this worn denarius from when he was a young Caesar with Spes on the reverse - I like how hopeful he looks:
One like the OP's example: Marcus Aurelius. As Caesar, 139-161 AD. Æ As (28mm, 10.74 gm, 6h). Rome mint. Struck under Antoninus Pius, 140-144 AD. Obv: Bare head right. Rev: Implements of the augurate and pontificate: secespita, aspergillum, guttus, lituus, and simpulum. RIC III 1240a (Pius). Good VF, glossy black patina. A splendid, near-perfectly centered portrait of young Marcus Aurelius. Ancient scratches on jaw and neck and reverse exergue.

Wonderful coins everyone! Here is my favorite Marcus Aurelius as Caesar – in my eyes one of the most dramatic and beautiful Roman portraits in my collection: Marcus Aurelius (as Caesar), Roman Empire, denarius, 140–144 AD, Rome mint. Obv: AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS; head of Marcus Aurelius, bare, r. Rev: IVVENTAS, Iuventas (youth) standing l., dropping incense in candelabrum and holding patera. 17.5mm, 3.16g. Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG TR [P XXVI], bus of Marcus Aurelius, draped and laureate, r. Rev: [IMP VI] COS III, Roma seated l. on pile of armor, leaning on shield, holding sceptre; in fields flanking, SC. 30mm, 26.95g. Ref: RIC III Marcus Aurelius, 1037.
