But the point of the Euro IS to remove nationalism. To help facilitate trade among the European nations where the citizens of various countries cross international borders as often as we cross state lines here in the US. That's why they all agreed to switch to the Euro to begin with - it was a lot of hassle for everyone with forty eleven different currencies. And having a universal currency necessitates at least a modicum of uniformity. Which is why 1 side of the Euro is the same in every nation.

But - to accomodate folks with the same point of view as you and to allow the various nations to maintain at least some of their individualism - the design of the other side of the coin is up to them to decide. Seems like a good compromise to me.

Personally i don't think one side is enough, i'd like all three sides as bold statements of nationalism!

It's probably the reason why i can't justify the euro's existance.

I heard some Eurocrat say that eventually it would make sense to have identical coins across the EU - no national sides. This is the way some think Europe should head. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

I'll leave my political beliefs regarding this outside.

But from a strictly collector's point of view it's dreadful news. Can you imagine a uniform design on all the coins, presumably for however the euro lasts? Bye goes the artwork, the design and any pride that coinage once had.

It's just more evidence to me of how bad modern coinage is deteriorating.

It'll be worse than US coin ND.

Imagine if you will, both sides of ever coin stay the same for good.

All have the same obverse. The reverses may differ between denominations, but they'll not change from year to year...

The only 'good', artistic designs will be on the commems, and i refuse to buy commems because i hate consumerism and degrading our hobby to the level of stamps.

Never changing designs. Like the next Jefferson which is written into law that the design will be forever? Like any of us will ever live to see Lincoln, Washington, or Roosevelt leave our coins. While the occasional face lift may take place, we are in a sad state of affairs.
Where are the sculpters of old? When coins spoke not only to the register but to beauty.

When was the last time someone looked at their change and yelled "Wow look, a 1987 Washington Quarter".

I had better bite my lip now. Seems we have traveled down this path before....

I'd like to see some of our circulating coinage go back to the days of liberties and native americans. The presidential series are somewhat stale in my opinion.

Yes but ND, what's happening in Europe would be like keeping all the US coin design reverse the same as they are now, but replacing all the obverses with Lincoln. So Linc's on every coin. Now is that a chilling thought?

So you see you've got it slightly better, at least you get some slightly varied monotony. :D
