Absolutely you have to start somewhere. Your collection has been great. What did you collect before Ancients?
Nice addition. Mine is Bings castoff, but works for me. MN FONTEIUS CF (85 B.C.) AR Denarius O: Laureate head of Apollo Vejovis right, M FONTEI CF behind, thunderbolt below, ROMA monogram below chin. R: Infant Genius riding goat right, caps of the Dioscuri above, filleted thyrsos below. Rome 4g 20mm Cr353/1a
Terrific posts!!! Some of you will recall I have the other 'larger' version; Vejovis with EX A P (Anonymous--no moneyers name), Cupid/goat and the caps of the dioscuri) 353/2:
Great OP-score, Lawyer (I love your sweet new barnyard example) => I also have a pretty cool example ... Ummm, some people say that it's not the size of your goat that matters, but it's always nice to be packing a hefty goat!! ... I'm just sayin'
Thanks for the hilarious posts. I was drinking a cup of tea as I was reading and a lot ended on my keyboard as I was dying from laughter. Yeah, the "hefty goat" was a nice consolation after being outbid on all my Indian and Southeast Asian coins. There was one particular Asian coin that was one out of only 39 known to exist. Despite literally opening my wallet and flinging cash at the auction, someone else wanted it more. I didn't even expect to win this denarius because I was so focused on the Asian coins. I guess there were one or two big spenders that decided to dabble in Asians this time around. Oh well, a Roman Republic Denarius is as sweet a consolation prize as you could hope for, not to mention the sweet goat.
Yes ... and again, our examples have the "CF" underneath the chin which seems to be the easy indicator that our coins have the sought after "big goats" => congrats You da man!!
Great pick-up. I think a RR silver is a great consolation. My Cupid on a goat coin - MZ's (much rarer) coin is a good example of where I normally draw the line on varieties. I was watching a recent auction and my prime targets went well above what I would bid. I considered bidding on a version of my coin with the caps to the side instead of on top. I passed, but was tempted.
