I thought it was funny. And the potential that it was original, or rather contemporary, along with the history behind it, made it that much more interesting to me. That "lady" is safely tucked away until FFIVN gets older haha.
That 1798 and 1816 are making me drool a bit. My Draped Bust is almost a slug. My Classic Head isn't much better.
I mean the history behind that alteration is certainly very interesting... just got to be careful that some youngsters don't find it lol
Those are some nice ones, I just got an 1810 and an 1814, haven't had time to photograph them properly but I might post them when I do
34s and 35 my next target dates... but you never know what might pop up while hunting 5 varities listed in the album for the 34 fun fun fun
after double checking I sorry to say I think it's just a regular strike but a 13 without a doubt if you look at the 3 pcgs varities (regular, 292 and 293) you can see how they could wear to look like yours
On the NGC price guide they show AU Details coins under AU50. https://www.ngccoin.com/auction-cen...-ms-desig-BN-fgrade-50-tgrade-50-coinid-11883 So you can go there and look at the "details" and "genuine" ones. Or search on Heritage. Seems like $60-80 might be a fair value, but I don't know if those buyers were cherry picking something.
Large cents and half cents have become a center point in my collecting activities in the past couple of years. It is addicting and I have trouble passing up nice coins that I already have double or triple of. The problem, if you want to call it that, is most dates have multiple die pairings that create slightly different coins due to differences in the often hand cut dies.
I do something like that, but at 80% discount; ie $100 = $20. But I'm a DETAIL kind of guy at the right price. I see a lot of buy-it-now detail coins at 20% off instead of 80% off. I see a lot of rarities like this that don't even work with a rarity premium.
'Details' grade is just a cop-out to avoid giving a value-estimate. 'Net' grade (as used by EAC collectors) is a value-opinion meaning "should sell around the price of a no-problem xxx". I have seen 'Detail-graded' large cents that run all over the map. One 'Details VF' large cent I might grade net Good, another I might grade net Fine. Good and Fine draw notably different prices.
