I bought a small pile of foreign coins today for the whopping total of $7. I’ve started buying more foreign coins lately and it’s probably time I start learning about them. In the group picture below there are several nice British pennies, half pennies and two really nice farthings. Both are in great condition. There’s also a 1970 proof 1 shilling. Grabbed 9 Mexican coins several of which are AU or a little better. Got a nice ‘45 Canadian V nickel, a rough large cent, a ‘41 New Foundland cent and an 1844 bank token. Found an apothecary weight and several European coins from the late 19th and early 20th century. I assume the 1320 coin is using Arabic dates. In the middle is a 1792 dated coin I haven’t ID’d yet and an 1805 Caralous III coin. Next to them are two Asian coins, a ten cash and a larger coin that I know believe is silver. Still have a lot of work to do on there. And then the smallest coin I’ve ever found is the center portion of an 1844 Victoria model Penny. There’s a latter picture of it on a wheat Penny for scale. Any information you guys can provide on any of these coins, their history, value or the deal overall is appreciated. I need to figure out which coins go into 2x2’s and which go into the foreign jar. thanks for looking and let me know if you’d like additional pictures of any specific coins.
the 1844 canadian 1/2 penny bank token is copper but has decent value ($6-10). The 1941 Newfoundland penny has some value too! 1941 C 827 662 $ 1.03 $ 1.82 $ 2.91 $ 4.67 $ 47 49% Struck in Ottawa .
Nice pick up! Like Paddy said I'd be happy with that lot. Some of your pics are out of focus and others are oriented in all sorts of directions, makes it hard to process and assist, if you could reorient that would be helpful, I'm getting a headache trying to look at them. The 'Arabic' one appears to be from Morocco, need in focus pictures of both sides, close up, cropped, no extraneous background. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...&v=&i=&b=&d=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se= Numista is a great source of identifying foreign coins
The Victoria Reg coin was part of a larger Bi-metallic model coin, looks like it's been removed from the larger copper shroud, possible it is silver, but good chance it's 60% Zinc 40% Nickel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1844_Victoria_One_Penny_Model https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia19751.html
Great buy! I love it! By the way, the Charles III is actually Charles IIII (or IV) of Spain. Easy to miscount. The 1792 appears to be one of the German states, although I'm not sure of that. There are many different and I can't quite make out the details. I believe the 1944 US/Philippine coin is the bronze one centavo rather than the silver 50 centavos, but it is hard to tell without seeing the reverse. They are of similar size. Yours just looks more bronze colored than silver.
I think the silver Chinese coin is from Yunnan province and is a 50 Fen, and likely is counterfeit. The strike and denticles don’t look right.
"The design of the coin was intended to promote the Canadian war effort during World War II. The coin was designed by Thomas Shingles, Master Engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint. The rim of the reverse side of the coin bears the message "We Win When We Work Willingly" in Morse code "
