i removed it, that's how i described myself to a peep on my dealings the other day and actually got the idea from the son describing his father in bargaining with a Christmas tree salemans in "A Christmas Story". i wasn't real comfortable after i posted it anyway, and i'm certainly not here to offend anyone. and i enjoy all the different ways of buying and selling, yours theirs mine all have + - =
to have it lost in the mail is not your fault, but you have to deal with it non the less. i feel for anyone in that situation. in my life, i've been back to point 0 a few times and had to start over.. either fortunately or no, i wasn't collecting coins then, but had i been they would've been gone too, along with everything else.
Well, if it was from Spain statistically it likely wasn't real anyway (they are they new place for fakes, much like Bulgaria was 20 years ago). But that doesn't mean your example was not good. Hopefully you got a refund.
you know, i've noticed that a lot of coins coming from there have been phony lately. now i'm cautious of sellers there esp those who charge high shipping prices. i withdrawn bids on some after looking at the past historys. my bad for knee jerk bidding.
Well, if you look at Ebay, 90% or more of anything coming from Spain is fake. Most easily observed, but many you cant tell from a crummy photo. Stick with known dealers.
My Spanish purchases have been from Vcoin dealers, but even here one must always be vigilant, regardless of source.
And that's why I never post a coin here or anywhere else until I have it hand. It's not superstitious but practical. This is my stupidest coin mistake. Harry Sneh sold this denarius to me in 2010. Unpublished, it was found by a metal detector in Hushwaite, North Hampshire in 2009. Carradice was made aware of the coin in 2010, and it is assigned 601A in the upcoming RIC II addenda. The actual find is registered at the UKDFD site Ref No: 16818. http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=16818&cat=135&date=1231717536 In 2013 I sold it in the mistaken belief I was done with Domitian and didn't much care for a chipped coin. I've purchased over 100 coins of Domitian since then. How I miss it and regret selling the piece to this day!
This was a few years ago, cheap bids and an inexperienced seller. Ebay did refund my money, and I felt badly that the seller basically got hung out to dry. Actually a second coin was lost too, but I didn't claim that, in sympathy with the seller. Maybe I should have if they were both fakes! Here's the second one. Hard to judge with all the dirt, a warning sign by itself. (Though the coin still looks OK to me.)
Spain to the UK can take months. I had to report a coin as not received to protect myself with ebay's policy. The seller was not amused even though I apologised and explained fully to him. It turned up a couple of weeks later. I left the seller good feedback, it wasn't his fault, but he didn't leave me any.
I'm still hoping against hope that a tattered envelope will show up one day from the deep recesses of Mordor (NYC Customs) with my "precious" inside. I will happily re-send that payment. But I fear that's highly unlikely after more than four months' waiting.
Lots of cautionary lessons to heed here! I was surprised at how many have had coins lost in the mail or through Customs.
