This contest is now CLOSED. Winner was announced in Post #43.

It's time for another short "instant giveaway". But first, some of the usual blather you are by now used to from me.

One of the LordM metal detectors is coming out of mothballs today. I have not "put the coil to the soil" in seven years.

This is the only machine out of three I own that still worked when put away in storage, years ago. It is one of my "backup" machines, since my primary detector died in England in 2013. Stupidly, I stored this one with the batteries still inside it, not realizing it would be mothballed for seven years. To my surprise, it was not a corroded mess inside when I got it out of the shed yesterday, and the LCD display partially came on when I hit the power button. So I'm hoping that a fresh set of batteries is all that's needed to resurrect this machine.

I wish I could say the outing was for a coinshooting mission, but it’s strictly utilitarian. A friend of the family needs help finding some buried boundary markers.

As you can see, my crack team of specialists is gathered for a detailed inspection of the long-mothballed equipment.

So this is not going to really be a recreational detector outing. However, according to online records, the home where I’ll be searching for buried boundary markers today was built in 1943.

You can probably guess what I’m thinking...

    [IMG] [IMG]

I am so rusty, out of practice, and out of shape, it's pathetic. Morbidly obese, bad knees, nearly unable to bend or squat, and very short-winded. So let's not get our hopes up too much.

But I'm sure the property owner will be happy to let me do a tiny bit of recreational digging in the course of the boundary marker search.

In the limited time I'll be out there, will there be any fun finds? By this, I mean any older coin, like a Wheat cent or a piece of silver. Or a piece of jewelry or interesting relic. Something other than modern coins and pieces of junk, in other words.

It has been eight years since I dug my last silver find- and seven years since I swung a detector at all.

We'll make this the latest "instant" giveaway. Let’s play a little game.

IF I find an older coin in the course of today's detector outing - any pre-1959 cent or pre-1964 silver piece- someone will win a Type 5 Lord Marcovan elongated coin, done on a Barber dime host coin. Only 60 of these were produced. There will also be an additional (unaltered) silver mystery coin involved. Not the one I dug, though- I keep all my dug silver finds.

IF, on the other hand, I strike out, and find nothing- or maybe just a modern coin or two- which seems the more likely scenario- I will not leave y'all empty-handed. I will still give someone a Type 1 Lord Marcovan elongated coin, done on a Wheat cent. Your choice of Type 1A (the holed variant), or Type 1B (the unholed variant).

To enter this contest: type the words "entry post" at the top of your entry, and merely predict what you think I'll find. Your predictions need not be optimistic, or even accurate. Everyone will get a chance in the drawing, regardless.

Whether the prize will be bronze (Type 1) or silver (Type 5) remains to be seen.

I'll announce the results of the search late Sunday night or sometime on Monday, when I get the chance.

    Wish me luck!

Sounds like fun, I had an outing like that once. Except it was hey cousin I lost my wedding band, I checked the house, can't find it. And if my wife gets home and see's me without my wedding band she is gonna kill me. LOL
I dug up some old hot wheels, some quarters, and of course Zlincolns etc. But no gold band. They found it about a week later inside the house.

Good luck on your coin search, UH, I mean property boundary stakes.

Entry Post. I was recently gifted a Metal Detector from my daughter and her husband while we were on the Outer Banks. Near my home in Maryland there exists an old sanitarium, abandoned decades ago, but part of the park system now and undeveloped. It is a large tract of land with dozens of buildings (unused and decrepid) that would be so much fun to search. if I receive permission, where would be a productive place to start - near the buildings or parking for instance?

Try to imagine where people walked and congregated. Lawns and sidewalks can be productive. So can curbside grassy strips, because people sometimes lost coins in the process of retrieving car keys.

Of course the really fun coins to find predate the automobile era!

Get out there and put that coil to the soil!

BTW, @Wizank- I found my first silver coin (at least since I began recordkeeping, not counting some of my teenaged finds) in the fall of 1992, at a site very similar to the one you describe. It was an old VA hospital complex, repurposed in modern times as a minimum security juvenile detention facility. I knew one of the fellas who'd been a "guard" there, and he had exclusive permission to hunt the grounds. He did very well. He was a detecting mentor to me.

I was excited to pop this beautiful silver Washington (still lustrous!) from one of the lawns.

Wow...what a beauty...best yield I've ever seen (if limited). How deep was it, and have you washed, dipped/rinsed or otherwise conserved it...? I don't know the routines, et al...I don't (yet) detect...but always wanted to start and maybe this will finally inspire me (understand rare)...but better late than never :woot:

Where can one purchase a quality detector for around $100-$200, and which is/are recommended...? Prefer a brick/mortar resource but online maybe OK.

@lordmarcovan - On pennies, why don't you imprint your logo on the reverse so that the original date of the coin is visible?
