Looking past the National Park quarters what design should be next

From a future perspective, I was thinking that future achievements of these places could be celebrated in quarter design programs. And of course the BiCent IKE $ already depicts Eagle landing on the moon, which is why I said the 'colonized' moon for future achievement and design choices, since a moon colony is in progress (planning wise and near mission wise, LRO went up last month) ;)

Yes of course there are plenty of the old type coins, but I was more focusing on current issues and looking forward, and yanking T$'s chain. I knew there'd be a stickler to yank mine eventually. :D

    What should be next?

I vote we go back to the old classical standards and do a nice original Liberty design with a fantastic majestic eagle on the reverse with high relief detail. Or low relief circulation and high relief collector versions.

That'd certainly be a relief! :goofer: ...from all these confusing busy designs the quarters have presented.

I think so too, I really got burned out about half way through the state quarters and then they made it so there will be so many reverses per year that it is not fun to collect coins meant for circulation anymore.

I'd love to see a commem for the moon colony too, I'm just not convinced we're going to see even a moon base let alone a colony in the next 25 years. Or much else in the way of space achievements. What I see now is that 41 years after we landed a man on the moon, we are now going to have to be depending on Russian rockets to get to the space station. And I believe that is supposed to be the situation for the next five years because the replacement for the shuttle won't be ready till then. Forty years ago we went to the Moon!!! Next year we won't be able to get to low earth orbit without help. Yes I think there will be a Moon base someday. But it may not be a USA base.

My guess is a moon base would be built and funded by huge coporations and not the government.

I have been thinking about this question and came up with a great idea. How about re-issuing all the past designs like the standing liberty and barber. They could do every design that was made a year or two at a time.. They could also do this with all the other denominations.

While that would be interesting it is not very creative as those designs have already been done. I would much rather they create something new and equal to those older designs before they started puting presidents on our coins.

I'd like a return to patriotic symbolism...Goddess Liberty, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, American Flag, ect ect. I think maybe we could start a thread and have the more artistic types on this site submit some designs. Then we should petition our congressmen to reform the coinage. Oh and a return to precious metals (like that would ever happen) Otherwise we'll end up trading our currency for pogs or something, bottle caps maybe. I'll trade you a vintage Budwiser for your proof Corona set. Something like that.

You wouldn't happen to be referring to those huge corporations that run the government already would you...

(This was a lighthearted joke, not a spark for political discourse.:smile)

Of course not because that would have been posted in a different forum. ;)

The space program is very active. There may be a period of time the US / NASA does without some capabilities but it is while they are working towards other goals and to clear other hurdles moving away from current generation technology. To tell the truth, I don't really care how or who goes into space, it's not a nation vs nation race for me the way the cold war era space race was propelled (pun intended)... It's really going to take everything humans have got to be off-planet, besides, this place is getting too darned crowded and we have lots of gold and silver to go out there to find so we can have a gold standard (or some PM-standard) again, and keep designing coins to mint and collect. ...is that Mars gold or Earth gold in that space dollar you're selling? LOL! :D

Glad I found somebody that agrees... :)
I don't really like the space program, I think the money we use on that could be used to actually HELP people here... Nobody is getting helped, when they know when they can see MARS.. OOOOO...AHHHH...
I think it is important to be able to detect meteoroids, but even with detection you cannot stop one, they are talking about creating a laser that destroys meteoroids, (snap) just like that... now this I would be okay with, if we drop everything else... Life on other planets, isn't an important question to me, we have life, on this planet, and that should be all that matters, try to find a way to keep us living the longest you can, is what you really should be doing. Overall, I don't know if the space program deserves a commemorative, but I'm sure everybody will be voting for it, and be on board 100%... The day that things commemorating the space program come on to circulating coinage, is the day I use a credit card. :D

Well, this was one of my favorite modern commemoratives:

Actually if we want to honor the Space Shuttle program since it will be done in a couple years why not put each of the US Space Shuttles on the reverse of the quarters in 2011? Release one space shuttle quarter every couple of months. I think that might be a neat idea but using a different view of each one.

Would be neat, but don't all of the shuttles look exactly the same anyways, especially when reduced down to quarter size?? I'm still waiting for my county's penny to be released sometime in the spring of 2314 :p

I have read in CW that they have decided to have Washington on the obverse and some version of him crossing the Delaware on the reverse. But a lot of things can change in 10 years....

Still hoping for Teddy Roosevelt on the National Park quarters, but I don't think the Treasury has the guts for it, despite their bravado talk. We'll see.
