I am trying to find out if there are any Roman coins, probably Republican denarii, that would have some connection to either Cornelia, first wife of Julius Caesar or his daughter, Julia, who was the fruit of that marriage and who married Pompey the Great.. Thanks for any help.
This is a pretty thin connection, but what about an anonymous denarius from a year when Cornelia's father Lucius Cornelius Cinna was consul? https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=52523
Thanks. I had actually thought of something put out by Cinna, but I was hoping for a female obverse, but thanks for the reply. I'll keep looking.
Not exactly a coin, but perhaps interesting: Cornelia, daughter of Cinna, wife of Gaius [Julius] Caesar
I've been trying to snag a "Julia", first and only daughter of Augustus for years And recently was underbider on a beautiful example last weekend
Yes, thanks. I had seen this. This source also has a similar drawing for Julia. Interesting that this source says that Cornelia was the SECOND wife of Caesar. I am still going to try to find actual First Century BC coinage related to these two if I can. Thanks again for the response.
Well, I hope you find your Julia but the Julia I am after is Julius Caesar's daughter by Cornelia. Thanks for that interesting video of a very young John Lennon.
No, there are no coins depicting these women. The first Julia to appear is Julia the daughter of Augustus: Livia, wife of Augustus, and Julia, daughter of Augustus. Roman provincial AE 17.2 mm, 3.44 g. Mysia, Pergamon, 10 - 2 BC. Obv: ΛΙΒΙΑΝ ΗΡΑΝ ΧΑΡΙΝΟΣ, draped bust of Livia as Hera, right. Rev: ΙΟΥΛΙΑΝ ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΗΝ, draped bust of Julia as Aphrodite, right. I actually did not think there were any of either Cornelia or her daughter by Julius Caesar that depicted either of these two, as neither one was important in their own right and even Caesar was not yet important at the age of 17 when he married Cornelia. What I was hoping for was a coin that could be related to either her or her daughter, Julia. For example, a coin related to Cinna, Cornelia's father or perhaps a coin of Pompey from the period when he was married to Caesar's daughter would fit the ticket. Thanks for your coin of the other Julia, Octavian's daughter.
