It is probably bronze. If that is pitting I see, then it might be PVC contamination, and once it has leeched into the metal that far, there is no recovery. Also, no one mentioned that when you use acetone be sure you are in a well-ventilated area, AN DON'T SMOKE AROUND IT! Chris
Don't soak it for more than a hour, anything longer is futile. Also, do not allow the acetone to evaporate or you'll just redeposit any dissolved residue on to the surface. Rinse with clean, fresh acetone when you remove it from the soak. If the composition is bronze, then the green is indeed verdigris. As Chris said, it may be the result of improper storage in a PVC containing holder too. Acetone will remove the PVC binder residue, but there's a chance some verdigris may still remain after the acetone soaking.
It has now been soaking 12 hours or pretty close. It still looks the same as it did at start of the soak. I left it out back uncoverd. I am going to go ahead a rinse and leave to dry. VERDI-CARE would be the second thing to try I guess after reading post? Going to look up online where I can pick some up. Thanks again everyone, I will keep you posted. Might take me a week or so because I am not sure where to buy Verdi-Care. *** Chris *** Worst case I could mail it to you to take a hands on look. Now that your the closest Coin guy to me. I did look up a new dealer who has a good rep with BBB Belleair Coins. Haven't had any extra money to go yet but will soon I hope.
My opinion: It's verdigris. The medal is probably bronze, or some copper-something composition. It happens. I hate to say it, but this is what a lot of viewers are probably thinking. It's a privately minted medal. And it's bronze, or something worse. It's not worth preserving. Unless you really like it, then you may want to preserve it. But don't expect to resell for a premium.
