I have been collecting for 60 years, and I can say that every week I learn something new, as well as teach others what I know when asked specifically. No one will or has ever known everything about numismatics. But all want to do more than just buy and put away. I started with Silver dollars and cents , and most of the first 10 years was just with those. Then I became more interested in varieties and there are many of those in those groups. A person feels much more pride and enthusiasm when they know a sub-set of knowledge well, rather than just a little about a lot of knowledge. It is really a life-time endeavor if you wish to make it such. Some people only collect specific areas of a wide variety, so what ever works with you. Everyone can make mistakes in their answer, some get upset when challenged, others research the possibility before responding, that is how we learn. Only the fools get into arguments without really understanding the question. And yes there are several of every day of the year. Do not get caught up in the nonsense and you will probably be like the song "Hotel California", checking in but can never leave. It will take a little time to find who knows what , and who just thinks they do. Read much more than post for a while until you get your feet set.

just ask questions that you thought thru and couldnt find answer to when you researched first. Then man up when you don't receive the answer you want. At 32 your skin must be thick enough to handle it. Coin talk members know their stuff. Also look at recent post and look for your subjects. And learn to laugh it off. Go bruins

Read these two threads ... you'll learn why people post the way that they do. Unfortunately, if these threads were only once in a while, instead of multiple per day it seems I think most would be more forgiving.

also just search on 1955 DD ...

For someone just getting started, I usually recommend starting with lower denominations, which is cheaper to begin with, and learn all you can about that particular class of coins, then move up.
I too had trouble (still do) with all of the acronyms and started my own list of them for reference and found this one to be helpful. https://web.stanford.edu/~clint/coinacro.htm
    Good luck.

I don't disagree with you @Randy Abercrombie bargain bins can be your best friend, when you are capable of understanding the difference between a worn coin, a damaged coin, and not to mention a doctored coin. These all are had in those bins.
IF one starts to associate himself with coins
That are Mint quality, they start to understand what happens to a coin once it left the mint. And lower grade coins are just that circulated, most are mis- handled, and damaged. Finding that gem in the rough takes practice. And I hope that the OP
@JoeFromMass responds to confirm that he is still here.

I hardly expected to see so many responses.

    Thanks

And if I ticked off senior members that's not what I was trying to do.

Thank you for the detailed response.

I really don't wish to sell any of the coins I find. I agree that I must look like a real jerk on here. This is hardly a get rich scheme, even I know the odds of discovering very rare coins are on par with the Powerball in terms of odds.

I have been reading a lot of the posts . I have been reading CoinTalk fourms far before i tried to apply.

Maybe i read too many troll posts as i am sure even the most patient collector will become tired of the ignorance.

Let me be clear, i do not want to waste anybodies time on here. CoinTalk is a priviledge, and I am honored by all the responses. Good or bad.

Again , I am sorry if I offended anybody.

    Go Bruins and Celtics.

I said I didnt care for disrespect . Ppl got mad.

    Who LIKES disrespect amirite.

In a seriousness I expected to be shat on.

When I google things cointalk is usually near the top.

A lot of the responses to the stupid questions are comical, and some are downright disrespectful.

And as far as getting the answer I want? Sometimes the answer I want isn't the correct one right? Thank you for the response my friend I hope you have a wonderful morning

A friend of mine was a P-51 Pilot in World War II, he passed away last month, when he left the Military he never flew another plane for the remainder of his life and he seldom spoke of his time in the Military...nice guy.

My Dad was a Navy carrier-pilot. These guys will talk, but in their meetings. My Dad's deceased, but I took him to his club a few times, and hung out. It started out as Navy, but as it went on, there were some P-40 guys in there, and one P-51 guy (I remember him well, they called him "Champ"). Amazing bunch of guys. I could sit there and just listen forever.

I guess it's just my personal problem, but whenever I see this thread title I think someone's looking for a coin veterinarian, and I get all twitchy.
