so i am posting this in the CRH forums because that is what lead me to this find, but first some back story. I do a box of pennies/nickels/dimes every week for silver and rare finds. i've been in a major slump for the last year getting nothing but boxes of 2014 and 2015 for the entire year of all 3 denominations and this week was no different.

i was very upset with this current streak and went to the bank to deposit my $375 in coins and i started dumping into the coin machine. it started to reject large amounts of nickels to the point of overflowing the reject bin. after the initial dump i did a secondary dump and a few of the nickels got stuck in the sorting "arm" which spins around and pushes the coins into the respective bags. i called the teller over because there was maybe .25 in nickels stuck in the sorting part of the machine under the arm, and she looked really annoyed and said "really? you broke the machine again?" kind of serious and kind of sarcastic (i'm in there every week).

she came over and opened the top and released the stuck coins and it printed my receipt which was about .70 cents short of $375. now keep in mind, these are brand new boxes so i should not be short. i told her i was missing .70 cents and she pulls out the INTERNAL reject bin (you can't get access to it unless the tellers open the top) - you know the one that catches all the batteries, paper clips, nails, etc. she dumps this bin which is full of coins on to the counter top and its full of NASTY coins covered in gum, oil, hair, etc. this lady is in her 20's, looks super high maintenance (has a michael khors watch) and says she isn't digging through those coins to get my missing coins. i told her i would just take those 3 quarters and call it even. she then turns around to the other tellers and says the dumbest thing i've ever heard "is it illegal to throw away money?". she was referring to the small mound of dirty coins and bandaids that was left and those 2 started a small discussion when i jumped in and said that i would take it. she told me they weren't mine and i argued that if you are wanting to throw it away that i would just take it. she looked surprised that i would dig through a dirty pile of coins when she finally gave in and said it was OK to take it. i quickly pushed them into my empty canvas bag and went to check out.

i got home and dumped the bag on the front porch and started to sort through them: damaged coins, foreign coins, batteries, band aids, paper clips, a couple of coins that appeared to have no problems, etc. i took a flathead screwdriver and pried the coins stuck together with gum apart, then took all of them and put them into a cup to soak with dish soap for a few days. fast foward to yesterday.

i was bored and started to dry off and put away the coins that i could use - about $1.42 total. i couldn't believe this lady was going to just throw away that much. after i put the usable change away i went to the foreign coins and briefly looked at them when something caught my eye: this gold looking coin. i flipped it over and it said 1915 on the reverse. i could make out on the obverse that it said austria. i went and googled 1915 austrian coin and matched it up with a 1915 1 Ducat coin - its GOLD - .118 ozs of pure gold (pics below). its beat to all hell but its still gold. i weighed it and my scale came out to .12ozs (supposed to be .118) so i guess its real and SUPER thin.

yeah - this chick was going to throw away a gold coin so she didn't have to get her nails dirty lolz

tl;dr - found a gold coin
