    I was visiting Point Reyes yesterday with a couple of comrades, and as we stopped by a small town, we noticed that they have their own, souvenir-type currency:
    a $3 coin!

    I bought a couple of things at a local store, and asked for the coin in change. Here it is:

    You can even see all the cities/towns where the coin can be used.
    @kaparthy might find this interesting.

    That's very nice. I wouldn't mind having one of those in my personal collection myself. In fact, that's better looking than anything we have in circulation currently.

    Pretty coin!
    I agree that it rivals what we carry from the US Mint.

    Interesting. I have seen a lot of local currencies, but they have all been in paper note form.Closest I have seen to this were some of the "trade dollar" pieces various communities/states had back in the late 1950's/early 60's. I would wonder if this piece is completely legal. It reminds me of back in the early 60's when the casinos in Vegas would honor each other chips. The Secret Service cracked down on that and required the casinos to only accept their own chips because honoring each others made the chips into an "alternate currency". I could see them turning a blind eye to this if it was good in a single community, but once it is made acceptable in multiple towns I'm not so sure.
